Why Fabian Delph’s exit leaves a sour taste in the mouths of Aston Villa supporters

Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph today made an extraordinary U-turn on his decision to stay at Villa Park this summer, with the 25-year old having signed for Manchester City despite days ago reaffirming his desire to stay with the Midlands outfit. He’s a player that would have had the fans’ blessing to leave had he not made a speech about loyalty, so his exit on Friday leaves a real sour taste in the mouth of Villa fans.

“I’m aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight. I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club. I am a loyal person and committing my future will hopefully show everybody what type of guy I am,” said Delph just days ago.

The former Leeds United midfielder came on City’s radar due to his form and international showings in the last 12 months. He is a highly industrious player, who will certainly give the disappointing Fernando/Fernandinho competition in the middle of the park, so Delph isn’t just there to make up the number.

As for his playing style, the Englishman covers a lot of ground in matches, and is very versatile. He’s sure to have the fans on his side due to his excessive work rate, and improving passing & shooting ability. He explained the reasons why he left Aston Villa, saying: “My decision (to stay) was purely down to the love I have for Aston Villa and their great supporters, rather than looking at the football opportunity that had been placed in front of me.”

It will be a big insult to Aston Villa supporters alike, as Delph was mad their captain for the new season – he’s hardly led by example. To  lose such a key player for his £8M release clause could prove costly for Tim Sherwood, who was hoping to have his spine intact for the new season.

His new manager Manuel Pellegrini was full of praise, saying: “Delph is an excellent player, and I am looking forward to working with him. He has made a huge impact in recent seasons at Aston Villa, and is now one of the brightest young midfielders in the Premier League. Fabian has tremendous skill and energy, and the fact that he has become a regular member of the England squad is further evidence of his progress.”

However, the manner of Delph’s departure is the biggest problem, as the England midfielder bent the truth to seal his dream move away this summer. He’s in for an interesting beginning to the new season, as the supporters will be desperately waiting for their reunion with him.
