Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale set to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu

Speculation about the future of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has died down with the players now back for pre-season training. The Welsh international had allegedly been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City this summer, but made it clear that he has no intentions to leave the Spaniards.

“Of course, yes (I‘m staying). I’m a Real Madrid player and I’ll carry on as normal. I am enjoying it, and hopefully I can continue to. I feel settled. I’m looking forward now to playing and winning more trophies. My goal is to keep improving, performing and to win as many titles as I can,” he said last month.

The 25-year-old endured a difficult second season in Spain, with the his form having been inconsistent throughout the campaign. Real supporters turned on the former Tottenham winger as a result, and subjected him to torrents of abuse, but Bale has incredibly thick skin to deal with the pressure.

Manchester United have been after a world-class winger this summer, with the likes of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia likely to be shown the exit door. Manager Louis van Gaal has new-boy Memphis Depay to play in the role, and the former PSV man could be pivotal to any future success at Old Trafford, but United could lose a big-name in Angel Di Maria.

Gareth Bale’s first two seasons could not be more contrasting. His debut campaign saw him score in their Champions League final victory, as well as their Copa Del Rey final win. However, his second term at the Spanish capital has left a lot to be desired. Bale’s form has been very inconsistent over the past 12 months, with the winger  having been guilty of missing easy chances, while underperforming in games.

New Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez looks likely to retain Bale’s services for the new season, and he was seen playing as a centre-forward in training. Upon his initial move to the Santiago Bernabeu, the former Southampton man revealed what a dream it was to be in the squad, so any future move away against his own will seems highly unlikely for now.

Real have stiff competition for places, with the likes of James Rodriguez and Isco desperate for more game time, so Bale knows he’s directly playing for his place in the team next season. His work ethic is something that needs improving, so he’ll use the pre-season fitness sessions in the week to get himself back into shape. His future, for now, lies with the Madridistas.
