With this weekend’s round of football producing little in the way of surprises as far as the top of the Premier League goes, we will be taking a look at which strikers did the job for their club the best.
A load of forwards managed to nab a goal, with a couple standing slightly above the others so let’s take a look at which ones made the biggest impact.
In fifth place we have Chelsea striker Pedro. The former Barcelona man will set you back 7.5m, but he’s only managed 16 points so far this season. He actually didn’t manage to earn any points for his fantasy managers out there in the weekend’s 1-0 win against Southampton, but he scored one of Chelsea’s goals midweek last week as the Blues ran out 3-1 winners at Huddersfield for four points.
Next up is West Ham star Marko Arnautovic. He scored one of the Hammers’ goals in their impressive 3-0 win at his former club Stoke, with that win lifting his side out of the bottom three and into 15th place.
It’s fair to say Arnautovic has struggled to really make an impact since his arrival at West Ham for a club record fee – those four points gave him a positive points total for the first time in the current campaign. A red card and a booking in earlier games of the season had put him on -3. He drew level on points in the 1-0 win over Chelsea and then this goal put him on four points for the season. If West Ham can continue this upward trend then that tally will surely only start going up.
In third place is Man City superstar Sergio Aguero. The Argentine has become a club legend by becoming their all-time leading goalscorer earlier this season, and like Pedro he didn’t actually earn any points this past weekend in City’s 4-1 win over Spurs.
He did bag a goal in their 4-0 win at Swansea last week which set a new record for 15 consecutive league wins, before City added further to that with the 4-1 win over Tottenham at the weekend. That is why he features on this list as his goals have helped the title contenders to new records galore already this season.
In second place is Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke. The former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker earned himself five points with a goal and an assist in their 3-0 win at Leicester, having lost one from going into the referee’s book.
At 8.5m he may seem a bit pricey for a club that has been struggling this season, but both Benteke and the team have looked a different prospect in recent weeks. His season’s total of -1 is sure to improve now he is finding a degree of form, so he takes silver this week.
The gold winner is none other than Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku. After a massive impact when he first arrived at the club, he has found it a bit tougher at times recently with sides paying him extra attention, and the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic will surely prove something of a distraction.
Lukaku showed signs that there is still plenty to come from him this season when United travelled to his old side West Brom. He scored on of the goals in a 2-1 win at the Hawthorns, adding to his three points earned in the midweek 1-0 win over Bournemouth. He scored the decisive goal in that one as well, losing a point for being booked.
