Heroics in Nantes lands Benoît Costil Ligue 1 player of the week

This week’s Euro Fantast Football Ligue 1 player of the week accolade is this week afforded to Bordeaux’s number one Benoît Costil, whose outlandish goalkeeping feats saw his side secure an unlikely away win at FC Nantes.

Costil’s side took a surprise lead over the fifth placed Ligue 1 side in the early exchanges of the fixture when centre forward Nicolas de Preville’s latched onto a driven a cross from the right byline to grab a 26th minute bullet header, his fourth goal of the season.

With his side ahead, Costil was forced to earn his pay for the remainder of the match, with a string of fine saves – four in total – giving his side an unlikely victory at Stade de la Beaujoire.

In a competitive second half that produced opportunities for both sides, Costil was first forced into a fine fingertip save, stretching his large frame to knock a speculative long range effort over the bar from Nantes’ Rongier.

However, the most notable moment of the French goalkeeper’s excellent performance for the Gironde-based side arrived late in the game when his all action style keeping the home team at bay – first beating a looping ball away from the head of Nantes midfielder Thomasson during a melee in the box, before recovering well to keep Santy Mgom’s shot from the rebound out with his feet.

His efforts may well have been unorthodox but they were critical in securing only a second win in the last five appearances for the side that now sit in 12th in the table.

Costil, who joined Les Girondins from Rennes during the summer – with whom he had spent the last six seasons – has started 20 of his side’s 22 league matches this season, keeping a respectable six clean sheets in the process.

The once capped French international has amassed 14 points over the campaign, seven points of which he bagged for his endeavours over the weekend’s action.

His heroics over the weekend exemplify that the 6’2” goalkeeper is capable of mixing it with the best stoppers in the league and he will undoubtedly be disappointed to have conceded a not insignificant 31 goals so far this season.

If the defensive guard in front of him can tighten up as they look to push on into the second half of the season then Costil could be on for a promising end to the campaign as he sets his sights on the outside possibility of securing a spot on the plane to this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
