Florian Thauvin is our Ligue 1 player of the week, with the Marseilles man securing a phenomenal hat-trick and assist in his side’s 6-3 victory over Metz.
An unorthodox route to the top of the game for a player of such obvious talent, Thauvin began his career at lowly Grenoble and Bastia, before arriving at the French giants Marseilles in 2013.
Indeed, such was his form for Marseilles during his first term at the club that he was rewarded with the opportunity to prove his mettle in the rigours of the Premier League at Newcastle United.
However, the move to the Premier League did not prove to be the success that he would have envisioned when completing his £15 million move, as he struggled for opportunities at his new home – managing a miserly 13 appearances for the club.
In search of game time, and the opportunity to prove his ability on the pitch, Thauvin has returned to Ligue 1 football with a new steely determination that is paying dividends on the pitch.
His season and a half back on loan at Marseille saw him secure a more than respectable 17 goals in 52 appearances, a return that was rewarded with a permanent move back to the south coast of France.
Since then, the 25-year-old has been a tour de force that has been a significant driving factor in his side’s rise to second in the table.
The wide man has contributed a fantastic record of 13 goals and 10 assists in his 24 appearances thus far this campaign – earning an impressive 91 points for his exploits.
Perhaps the most inspired performance of his time in Marseilles came this weekend, when his hat-trick proved the difference between his side and visitors Metz during a whirlwind 6-3 clash at the Stade Vélodrome.
Thauvin netted his first of the match when his perfectly timed run saw him meet Morgan Sanson’s cross to double his side’s lead in the ninth minute of the match.
He then forced home Germain’s goal bound effort in the 44th minute before returning the favour with a perfectly placed ball for his team mate in the 49th minute.
The attacker then rounded off his hat-trick with another perfectly timed run into the box, slotting in Payet’s whipped cross at the far post – a finish that secure him secure 18 points for the match.
Such has been his form in recent years that he has now worked his way into the picture for the national team, earning two caps since 2017.
His fantastic performances suggest a player that has grown in confidence and has grown in his understanding of the game.
It would be of little surprise if the Frenchman is one of the hottest properties in world football come the summer.
