This week’s La Liga game of the week saw Real Madrid bounce back from their surprise 2-2 away draw against Levante with a resounding victory at the Bernabeu – running out 5-2 winners over Real Sociedad as they seek to consolidate their position in next season’s Champions League.
Zidane and his men will have invariably been feeling the pressure ahead of this fixture, fully aware that any further slip-ups could result in Villarreal breathing down their necks.
A statement was needed from Los Blancos and was made emphatically from the first minute, as midfielder Lucas Vasquez headed in from a Cristiano Ronaldo cross within the first sixty seconds of the match to put is side immediately in the driving seat.
The fixture saw Ronaldo turn in by far his best performance of the season, having flattered to deceive for much of 2017/18. Having set up the first goal, he then doubled his side’s lead before the half hour mark – guiding home Marcelo’s cross.
Toni Kroos then added a quick third, the German curling in from the edge of the box to put him on 34 points for the season, before Ronaldo doubled his own tally with a powerful header to give the home side a commanding four goal lead at the break.
Having seen a raucous first half from the hosts, the first half an hour of the second half past largely without incident until the 74th minute when Jon Bautista took advantage of a lapse in the concentration of the Madrid back line to pull one back for the visitors.
Ronaldo then topped off his evening when he pounced instinctively upon a rebound to secure a hat trick, Sociedad goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli having spilt a long range effort from Gareth Bale.
Former Madrid man Asier Illarramendi bagged a late consolation for Sociedad to make the result more respectable, earning himself four points and a place in our La Liga team of the week.
Ronaldo has largely had a lacklustre season but his form of recent weeks suggests a return to his scintillating best, having now scored seven in his last four outings.
His hat trick and assist against Sociedad saw the 33-year-old bag sixteen points, by far and away the stand out individual performance of the weekend.
Madrid now face a potentially tricky journey to Real Betis next weekend whilst Real Sociedad will be hoping to return from their demolition at the Bernabeu as they host relegation threatened Levante.
