Sergio Aguero back in contention for the Golden Boot

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has made a strong comeback in the Golden Boot race this week.

Before this gameweek, the Argentinean was quite far behind Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah in the race to become the top Premier League goalscorer this season.

However, he produced one of the best striking performances of the season to score four goals in the 5-1 win over Leicester City this weekend. His performance not only earned him 18 fantasy points but also put him back in the frame for the Golden Boot race.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who has claimed the award on last two occasions, currently leads the table with 23 goals. He was also on target in the 1-0 win over Arsenal and picked up four points from the game.

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool is close behind Kane with 22 goals. The Egyptian has been the biggest surprise of this season, and he currently leads the EFL Premier League table with 122 points. He scored a goal and provided an assist in the 2-0 win over Southampton on Sunday. He picked up eight points from the game.

Before this gameweek, Aguero was far behind in the third spot with 17 points. However, following his four-goal salvo, the 29-year-old finds himself within touching distance of Kane and Salah. He has scored his 21 goals in 22 appearances this season. In comparison, both Kane and Salah have made 26 appearances this season.

Aguero won his last and only Premier League debut back in 2014-15 season. That season he scored 26 goals in 36 appearances in the league season.

Next season, Aguero finished only one goal behind Kane despite making only 31 appearances during the season. The Spurs striker was a clear winner during the 2016-17 with 29 goals in 31 games. The Argentinean striker finished with 20 goals in 37 games in what was a disappointing season for him and City.

However, the three-way battle this season is shaping up to be the best Golden Boot race in the recent years. Aguero certainly has an edge as the Citizens are expected to score more goals than Liverpool and Tottenham in their remaining games.

City’s next two games are against Arsenal and Chelsea, and they also resume their Champions League campaign this week. The Citizens also have a small matter of Carabao Cup final against the Gunners later this month.

The upcoming weeks look busy for the Citizens, and we expect Aguero to get enough opportunities to have a decent shot at the Golden Boot.
