The thrilling Manchester derby that saw Manchester United come from 0-2 to win 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday provided lots of fantasy points for players with some of Jose Mourinho’s regulars.
After Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan gave Manchester City a 2-0 lead at half-time, United’s Paul Pogba put in a man of the match performance with a brace in the space of 97 seconds that turned the game around in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. The French international hasn’t been in everyone’s good books this season but those fantasy players who stuck with the record United signing were paid dividends this past weekend.
Teammate Alexis Sanchez didn’t hit the ground running when he moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in January but the Chilean has found his form in United’s last two outings. Sanchez provided the assists for Pogba’s second goal and Chris Smalling’s winner, after playing a role in the build up to the first. The week before the forward got a goal and assist as he appears to have now found his feet at the biggest club in England.
Christian Eriksen was another high-scoring midfielder this weekend as he scored both goals for Tottenham in their 2-1 win at Stoke City on Saturday as Mauricio Pochettino went one step further towards sealing a Champions League spot for next season.
Back to the Manchester derby and Chris Smalling has been a regular in Jose Mourinho’s back four following the injury to Phil Jones. The centre-back usually chips in with a couple of goals each season and did just that by scoring the winner in the Manchester derby this past weekend. Smalling offers better value than Eric Bailly when he’s playing so fantasy players may have been feeling happy with their selection this weekend.
Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta was another goalscoring centre-back this past weekend whilst only Everton and Liverpool kept clean sheets, playing out a 0-0 draw together, in what was a low-scoring weekend for defenders. Therefore Jordan Pickford and Loris Karius were the best choices for your goalkeeper.
No strikers were on the scoresheet in the Manchester derby in what was a tough week for the top stars. Anyone with Danny Welbeck in their side was the big winner as he scored twice in Arsenal’s exciting 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday. Newcastle United’s Ayoze Perez will have done some fantasy managers proud with his delightful lob over Kasper Schmeichel at the King Power Stadium.
