Ligue 1 Player of the Week – Bertrand Traore (Lyon)

With the Ligue 1 season now quickly drawing to a close, all attention towards the top end of the table is geared towards 2nd – 4th place. Which three sides will make it into the Champions League next season? Which team will have to settle for Europa League football next term? Things are certainly heating up near the top of the table, with Lyon maintaining their slender grip on second place, a point ahead of Monaco having finally leapfrogged the principality over the last week or two. They are on a long run of wins at the moment, and much of the thanks for that is down to Bertrand Traore, their talismanic midfielder who has been so important to their campaign.

Traore, then, is certainly a worthy winner of this week’s Ligue 1 Player of the Week award. That was thanks to a brace in Lyon’s 3-0 win at home against Troyes, with Traore also bagging a couple of points for his side’s clean sheet as well. That tally of 10 for the week is a lovely figure for anyone who has him in their fantasy squad to see, and makes his 7m valuation seem like a fairly sweet deal. He is now on 81 for the season and a Performance / Price ratio of 11.9.

Both of Traore’s goals came in the first half, with Maxwell Cornet adding the third with just a couple of minutes left on the clock to boost their hopes of reaching Europe’s primary club competition. They will need to keep one eye over their shoulders of course, as Monaco returned to winning ways thanks to a Moussa Sylla strike in stoppage time, winning a tight against Caen with the score finishing at 2-1.

Traore, who began his senior career with Chelsea in 2014 before moving to Lyon in 2017 following loan spells at SBV Vitesse and Ajax, has already earned himself 42 caps for Burkina Faso, scoring seven goals. He is proving himself a vital player for the Ligue 1 high fliers, and whether or not a big move is in his future remains to be seen. However, he does seem to have found a true home at Lyon, and the club are vying to return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, where they ended up reaching the Europa League semi-finals having dropped out of the Champions League group stages.
