Following Southampton’s 1-0 victory over Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion have finally been relegated, leaving their inspirational recent resurgence all in vain.
Having won their last three matches and been unbeaten in their last five overall, their eight year stay in the Premier League is over, after an enormously disappointing season.
One of the few players who can hold their head high, though, is their powerful Egyptian defender, Ahmed Hegazi, for he’s unquestionably been a shining light in their season of darkness, with his assuredness, physicality and determination proving vital for the Baggies.
Signing initially on loan in the summer, before West Brom secured his services permanently in December, the 195cm colossus has been a mainstay at the Hawthorns, as he’s done all he can to help his team stay afloat. Performing with admirable consistency, which is made all the more impressive considering it’s his first year in the Premier League, Hegazy has featured in all 37 of WBA’s league fixtures.
Aside from obvious highlights such as scoring on his debut, and keeping Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane in check on both encounters with Spurs, Hegazi’s consistency and approach to his work has seen him produce a very memorable campaign. Indeed, through this, he’s even earned hero status at West Brom, as the fans love the way he goes about it.
Undertaking his work with intelligence, forcefulness and effectiveness, Hegazi’s definitely been one of the signings of the season. Considering he was acquired with the intention of being a useful backup, he’s done tremendously well to adapt and become an indispensable member of this Baggies side.
Although his campaign will end in relegation, there’ll surely be no shortage of suitors for the imposing stopper, who’s acquitted himself wonderfully during this arduous campaign. And for that, he deserves all the credit that comes his way.
