The first in our series of player profiles looking at the performances of the best midfielders from across the Premier League sees us look at the exploits of the revelation that is Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, the once-upon-a-time Chelsea reject that lit the division alight in his maiden season at the club.
Having arrived from Italian side Roma following a protracted transfer negotiation that eventually saw him join the Reds in a deal purportedly set to cost the club €42m, with the potential to rise-up to €50m, the club’s desire to secure the talents of the Egyptian proved to be an inspired decision.
Electric quick, technically gifted and a talented goal scorer with a knack for arriving in the box at the opportune moment, Salah has proven the perfect fit for the high-octane style of play that Jurgen Klopp has implemented at the club.
The 25-year-old managed a tally of 179 points over 2017/18, a record that was the greatest of any player within the Premier League and an incredible 62 points ahead of nearest rivals Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.
One key element to Salah’s impressive points tally was the sheer volume of goals he has netted this season, with the former-Chelsea man finally going on to break the longstanding top goal scorer record of 31 Premier League goals on the final day against Brighton and Hove Albion – usurping such formidable names as Luis Suarez, Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo.
He also joined an elite group of players that have managed double figures in both goals and assists over a campaign – his relationship with front three partners Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, who managed 107 and 73 points respectively, being critical to the success of the Liverpool season.
His exploits over the season has seen the winger clean up at the nation’s award ceremonies despite stiff competition from the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and his City colleagues, as he went on to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Writers’ Player of the Year.
In a team that continue to reach strength after strength under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp, the project Anfield appears to be the perfect environment for the Egyptian to continue onto his path as one of the world’s greatest attackers and he will be eager for the 2018/19 campaign to begin with Liverpool having already strengthened their midfield and other key targets seemingly being lined up.
