You’d be hard-pressed to find a goalkeeper who made a bigger impact this past season than Roma’s Alisson Becker. While he may not be the number one goalkeeper in the world, the Brazilian saw his name at least catapult into the conversation of the top five best throughout the globe. There were so many brilliant individual performances from the Roma shot-stopper that it’s difficult to pick the best. Yes, Alisson saw himself go from being the back-up of Wojciech Szczesny to the undisputed top goalkeeper in Serie A this season…which is great for him, but could be a problem for Roma.
It’s no secret that Roma have had a run-in with UEFA’s much maligned Financial Fair Play even though their settlement agreement is set to end this summer. Despite earning €100 million from this season’s Champions League competition, Roma are still faced with the prospect of losing a top player, though, this time it isn’t due to financial reasons.
Thanks to their European campaign success, the Giallorossi aren’t forced to make a big sale this summer, particularly before the end of their financial year, which ends 30 June. While the club will still undoubtedly make sales to get rid of some of the dead-wood while also making a profit on players who may not be important to the project, the potential sale of Alisson all comes down to one thing: the will of the Brazilian.
Speaking after his side’s friendly victory over Austria, Alisson released an ominous statement as he revealed he’d prefer his future to be sorted before the World Cup and that he and Roma are “working on things”. So what could that mean? It would be difficult for any club to turn down an offer in excess of €75 million after having spent only €8 million for the player two years ago. Alisson hasn’t hidden his admiration for Real Madrid – add to the fact his wife is Spanish, could the reigning Champions League winners be the ones who lure the Brazilian, or could it be the runners up who Roma lost to by only one goal on aggregate? Could Alisson even fool us all and sign a big contract renewal with Roma?
The upcoming days will certainly reveal a lot. The Giallorossi will certainly hope they’re able to hang on to the player, which is what president James Pallotta has stated the entire season, but being able to match the wages of what Real Madrid could offer the player will certainly be a difficult task. Regardless of the final destination, Alisson will undoubtedly have an impact wherever he goes.
