French legend Zinedine Zidane has announced the news that he is ready to come back to management. He told Spanish broadcaster TVE “yes, surely, soon I will return to training because it is what I like and is what I have done all my life.”
Zidane who coached Real Madrid to an historic 3 Champions League titles in a row has been out of work after he suddenly quit the team in June. Yet he was applauded for doing so in some quarters given that he had realised that there was nothing else to achieve at the club. And in doing so in winning fashion he goes out a winner and will always remain a legend at the club as player and manager. But if Zidane is coming back into management where will his next club be and more importantly where should it be?
The 46 year old’s family are based in Spain, but Zidane coaching in the country seems to be almost impossible. A switch to Barcelona simply will not happen and the only other team capable of trophies right now is Atletico Madrid another direct rival of Real. There is no way even if Zidane was given the chance that he would risk his legacy with Real Madrid by making such a switch so we can rule out Spain.
Could Zidane return back to his home country? There is more possibilities here but at the same time PSG are the all conquering force and they have just signed up Thomas Tuchel who is doing a brilliant job and there is no way he will be replaced for at least 2 or 3 years. But Zidane of course has close connections to Marseille and if he was to come back to France that would be his number 1 choice. He was born there and played there and the fans still sing his name, it would be quite a homecoming. Still the team don’t quite have the financial muscle and after the nostalgia dies down that could prove to be quite a risky move at this stage in his career.
Next is Italy and the obvious link to Juventus where Zidane enjoyed so much success and really built himself up as one of the greats at the Turin club. Still Juve’s coach Massimiliano Allegri wouldn’t be easy to budge given that in his 4 seasons with the club they have won 4 titles. The pressure is on this season with the capture of Cristiano Ronaldo though to win the Champions League. Fail at that and the door might start to open for Zidane.
In the Premier League there has been speculation that Zidane is ready to take over at Manchester United in the wake of their average start to the season. Jose Mourinho has been outspoken and is trying to steady the ship- though it is clear that if they start to stall once again Mourinho’s job could well be on the line. Zidane and Manchester United does seem like a perfect fit and only time will tell if that opportunity will open itself up.
