Chelsea lie second in the Premier League table after winning eight and drawing three of their first 11 league games under Maurizio Sarri.
However, only Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has used fewer players so far in the league this season, which means there are several players at Chelsea who have been unable to break into the team since Sarri’s arrival in the summer.
Let’s take a look at five high-profile stars who should consider their Stamford Bridge futures ahead of the January transfer window…
When your new manager tells you that you’re not suited to his tactics and then gives you 30 minutes of playing time in three months, you know your days are numbered. Chelsea’s new boss clearly isn’t a fan of Danny Drinkwater and made it clear in a press conference last week that the £35 million midfielder will have to improve if he’s to stand a chance of featuring this season.
Like Drinkwater, Victor Moses has found himself out of the Chelsea XI following Sarri’s appointment. The Nigerian was a regular starter for much of Antonio Conte’s reign but his new boss does not see him as a full-back or a winger, so he does not fit into the system that the Italian has implemented this season. The former Crystal Palace man has played just 26 minutes in the Premier League in 2018-19.
Chelsea loaned out 40 players in the summer, yet Lucas Piazon was not one of them. The 24-year-old has made 147 appearances on loan at five different clubs over the last six seasons. This looked set to be a possible breakthrough year for him when the transfer window passed and, for once, he wasn’t sent out on loan. However, he hasn’t played a single minute so far in 2018-19, so it’s likely he will move on in January.
With N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley to choose from in central midfield, Cesc Fabregas is hardly getting a look-in at Chelsea this season. He has started five matches but none of them have been in the Premier League, which means he will almost certainly leave when his contract is up at the end of the season, if not in January. Inter are reportedly interested in the World Cup winner.
A regular starter under Antonio Conte, Gary Cahill has played just 21 minutes in the Premier League this season. He mentioned in interviews earlier in the campaign that he needs to think about himself and that it will be “very difficult” to not play much in 2018-19, so expect to see several top-flight clubs make approaches for him in January.
