Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez looks set to leave the Camp Nou in January with a number of reports linking him with a move to the English Premier League. Arsenal are the club most prominently linked to the 24-year-old, while London rivals Chelsea are among the other sides linked.
The midfielder, formerly of Sevilla and Villarreal, moved to the Camp Nou from Manchester City in 2013 but has seen first-team football at the Blaugrana extremely limited. The 25-year-old has played just 17 minutes of La Liga action this campaign and badly need a move if he is to earn any first-team football.
The Galician native’s one truly prominent season at the Catalan giants came in Luis Enrique’s final campaign at the helm in 2016/17. He featured in a total of 36 matches that time round having starred for Villarreal and Sevilla in the respective seasons prior, whilst out on loan deals.
It was at the latter that Denis impressed under Unai Emery, who is now at the helm of the Gunners. RAC1 say the out-of-favour central midfielder prefers a move to the North London club because of the coach, while Arsenal are on the lookout for a replacement for Aaron Ramsey – whose deal expires this summer and he will not renew.
Denis has only 18 months left on his deal at Barca and Diario Sport have recently linked Everton, West Ham and Watford – where his former teammate Gerard Deulofeu is currently a mainstay – with a move for the midfielder.
The player reportedly wanted an exit from the Camp Nou this summer but bizarrely, the club’s valuation ruled out a move away. They now appear to have softened their stance, but the questions must be directed towards why they did not allow his departure earlier when they had little intention of including him in the first-team squad.
Arthur Melo and Arturo Vidal were both signed this summer and even despite injuries – including a season-ending one for Rafinha Alcantara – Denis has not been thought of by the management of the club. Marlon Santos, Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina, Aleix Vidal and Deulofeu were all allowed to leave in 2018 alongside the loan departures of Andre Gomes, Paco Alcacer, Paulinho, Douglas, Adrian Ortola and Arda Turan, yet Denis remained.
The midfielder is extremely talented even if his play is somewhat limited. He does not offer physicality and rarely commits to challenges or aerial duels, while his finishing has always been viewed with suspicion. This is a player who keeps the style of the game need and tidy; playing short passes, layoffs and maintaining the flow of the attack.
Whoever his new club are, it will be a relief for the player to find an environment who will trust him to feature in first-team games and provide him with the platform to showcase his talent.
