Top LaLiga Goalkeepers in 2018/19 – Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Barcelona’s 27-year-old German international was the second-highest scoring goalkeeper in fantasy LaLiga in the season just ended.

Ter Stegen, who moved to the Catalan club from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, started in 35 of Barcelona’s 38 LaLiga fixtures in 2018/19.

He has been the first-choice goalkeeper at Barcelona since the 2016/17 campaign.

This season, Ter Stegen won his fourth LaLiga title at Barcelona. He adds this medal to his four Copa del Rey wins, one UEFA Champions League title and one Club World Championship.

Ter Stegen won 7 fantasy LaLiga points on 16 occasions throughout 2018/19 – generally, this is the maximum a goalkeeper can hope for in fantasy LaLiga terms unless they are lucky enough to add an assist or goal to their clean sheet points.

His worst score in a game was -6 points which happened on two occasions. The first was in Barcelona’s 4-3 defeat at home to Real Betis in November and the second was in their thrilling 4-4 draw at Villarreal in April.

Ter Stegen’s points in a game were only in the minus figures 9 times during the season. He finished with a total of 86 points which brought him in as the second-best goalkeeper behind Jan Oblak who had 119 points.

The German goalkeeper injured his right knee in early May so it will be interesting to see if he is recovered in time for a full pre-season training programme.

Ter Stegen will also have to contend with the mental anguish of his side’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool. Barcelona were 3-0 up after the first leg at Camp Nou. However, a stunning Reds performance at Anfield a week later gave them a 4-0 win on the night and put them through to the final on a 4-3 aggregate scoreline.

Barcelona stumbled home in the rest of their games after the Anfield defeat and even lost the Copa del Rey final against Valencia. Luckily, they had already secured the LaLiga title victory before they met Liverpool in the Champions League.

How they, and Ter Stegen, respond at the start of next season remains to be seen.

At 27, Ter Stegen probably still has the best years of his career ahead of him as many goalkeepers don’t enter their peak phase until they hit 30 or older.

Ter Stegen seems happy at Camp Nou and should get to spend many more years at Barcelona if he maintains or improves on his current level of performance.
