Top LaLiga Goalkeepers in 2018/19 – David Soria

David Soria

Getafe’s David Soria has just finished the best season of his relatively young career to date. The former Sevilla goalkeeper played a huge part in helping Getafe to their best-ever LaLiga finishing position – 5th – in 2018/19.

The 26-year-old Spanish ‘keeper only signed from Sevilla last July for a bargain-basement cost of €3 million.

Soria went on to start 37 of Getafe’s LaLiga games, keeping 13 clean sheets along the way. He also saved two of the seven penalties he faced in the league during the season.

Getafe’s fifth-place finish means they will play in the UEFA Europa League in 2019/20, giving players such as Soria the opportunity to showcase their talents on a more internationally renowned stage.

In fact, it could have been even better for the southern Madrid club. For much of the season, Getafe occupied fourth-place in LaLiga and was dreaming of a debut appearance in the Champions League in 2019/20. However, Valencia just pipped them to that top-four finish and took the final Champions League qualification spot in the process.

Soria was the third-best fantasy LaLiga goalkeeper in 2018/19, coming in behind only Jan Oblak and Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Soria finished with 71 LaLiga fantasy points, 22 points clear of his closest rival, Iago Herrerin of Athletic Bilbao.

Costing just 6.0 million, Soria was a bargain to be had between the sticks if you were looking to spend the bulk of your fantasy LaLiga budget on your outfield stars.

He didn’t receive a single yellow or red card in the whole campaign meaning there were no silly, unnecessary dropped fantasy points from the Getafe man.

Getafe lost only 9 of their 38 league games, conceding 35 goals – an impressive stat for the club as they secured their highest ever league finish in Spanish football.

Soria and Getafe had one of the toughest LaLiga starts they could have faced when they travelled the short distance to the Santiago Bernabeu on the opening weekend of the season.

Real Madrid beat them 2-0 on the day, meaning Soria finished with -2 LaLiga fantasy points in his first game for Getafe.

However, the next three games saw Getafe’s new goalkeeper achieve three consecutive clean sheets, winning himself 7 points in each match.

Soria would be awarded 7 points on 10 more occasions throughout 2018/19.

His worst total in any game was -2 points but this happened in 10 LaLiga fixtures. However, it should be noted that was the lowest score Soria was given all season, meaning Getafe never conceded more than two goals in a LaLiga game in 2018/19.

Soria will most likely cost a little more than 6.0 million in fantasy LaLiga next season but he could still be a bargain for your team. Keep him in mind for when August comes around.
