Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 1

Results: Juventus and Napoli started with three points as the Bianconeri nipped Parma, while the Partenopei outlasted Fiorentina in a crazy match. Atalanta staged a glorious comeback against SPAL, Milan took a tumble in Udine and Roma were too naïve versus Genoa. Lazio thrashed Sampdoria and Inter did the same against Lecce. Torino edged out Sassuolo. Verona hanged on to dear life versus Bologna and Brescia caught Cagliari off guard on the road.

Confirmations: Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile, Luis Muriel and Simone Zaza got off to a flier thanks to their braces. The Colombian striker had the most impressive one, sigle-handedly turning the SPAL bout. Kevin-Prince Boateng, José Callejon and Joaquin Correa bagged terrific cross-shots, while Erick Pulgar remains deadly on penalties. Dries Mertens surprised the goalkeeper with a trademark curl. Roma got two terrific goals with Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov, but Genoa responded blow after blow with their best trio: Andrea Pinamonti, Domenico Criscito and Christian Kouame. Andrea Petagna once again punished his former team. Francesco Caputo’s goal poaching skills stay pristine and Alfredo Donnarumma canned a decisive penalty. Romelu Lukaku and Stefano Sensi could not hoped for a better debut in San Siro.

Guess who is back: Cengiz Under remerged with one of his customary left strikers. Federico Di Francesco had a great debut with SPAL, but they could not finish Atalanta off and Robin Gosens kick-started the comeback with the usual wingback-to-wingback Goddess connection. Nicola Sansone sunk a penalty, but Miguel Veloso equalized later on. Antonio Candreva and Marcelo Brozovic had not scored in a while and bagged two scorchers.

Surprise scorers: Giorgio Chiellini is no stranger to finding the net but I guess few picked him for the first goal of the season. Nikola Milenkovic and Rodrigo Becao netted magnificent headers.

Flops of the round: Milan could not get anything going offensively against Udinese, while Sampdoria looked hapless defensively in front of Lazio and Cagliari were too discombobulated. Bologna’s forwards should have taken advantage of their one-man advantage for most of the Verona game. Cristiano Ronaldo misfired on some comfortable chances for somebody of his caliber.
