Even though they did not succeed in getting a shut-out victory due to a cheap consolation goal, Atalanta were quite clearly the most dominant Serie A club of the weekend, as they torched Lecce.
They were hosting their first real home game of the season, as they had been playing in Parma in Serie A and at San Siro in Champions League so far. Their new and improved arena, which is now named after the naming sponsor Gewiss, features a Westfalelnsatdion-like Curva.
The Bergamaschi had soundly beaten Sassuolo and Roma in their last two matches and were third in the standings. Gian Piero Gasperini did not really rotate the squad despite the midweek Champions League bout, therefore keept Luis Muriel and Ruslan Malinovskyi initially on the bench, while Simon Kjaer, Berat Dijmsiti and José-Luis Palomino formed the back-line and Timothy Castagne played over Hans Hateboer on the right flank.
The Goddess put pedal to the medal immediately and did not look back. After one minute, Alejandro Gomez picked out Duvan Zapata with a soft cross, but the striker sent a rather easy header over the bar. El Papu set up Josip Ilicic at the ninth minute, but the attacker put his cross-shot wide from favourable position. The Argentinian fantasista challenged Gabriel on his own from distance, but the goalie rejected him.
The Orobici did finally break through after 35 minutes, as Robin Gosens stripped an opponent deep into his own territory, found Zapata, who smashed it home from the right-hand portion of the box. Gomez made it two-nil five minutes later, combining with the Colombian teammate and knocking it on goal with a cross-shot.
Gomez almost had a brace thanks to a curled shot at the beginning of the second half, while Gosens tried to tap-in another effort by Gomez, but Gabriel saved. The Dutch fullback did manage to score later on, after a fantastic triangle with Josip Ilicic that shredded the Salentini centrally and allowed him to finish uncontested in the one-on-one. The Slovenian international, instead, was not so lucky in a similar situation, as the goalkeeper got in his way and a defender cleared the ball before it crossed the line.
Gabriel prevented the score to swell up even further with two extraordinary saves on Gomez and Luis Muriel, who had again perforated the back-line. The Giallorossi found the target with five minutes to go, with Fabio Lucioni hitting the net on a header on a Filippo Falco set piece.
Atalanta stay in third but gained points on all their rivals. Fantasy-wise, Robin Gosens and Duvan Zapata both garnered six points for the goal-plus-assist performance, while Gomez corralled four for scoring and Ilicic two for the assist.
