Juventus jogged around in the first half, but key mistakes by the opponents paved the way to what ended up to be a larger-than-deserved rout. Lecce caused some troubles at the beginning of the game, but were the cause of their own demise for the second straight round.
Matthijs De Ligt (9 points): just two defenders on the pitch and they got to rest for half of the contest since the lights went off for the Salentini after the red card. The start was not promising as the lack of focus in the back-line was palpable, but no harm was done in this case despite a pair of chances. The Dutch starlet came through on the other hand with a freebie for the four-nil. Wojciech Szczesny had no saves.
Rodrigo Bentancur (1 point): what else is new, as the youngster continues to be head and shoulders above his teammates in the midfield, especially Miralem Pjanic and Adrien Rabiot, whose slow pace was detrimental even in a match like this one, although the Frenchman did fire a dangerous shot for a change. Bentancur had the pivotal play of the contest, as he stripped a careless Fabio Lucioni and forced him into a red card. Positive signals also from Aaron Ramsey, who entered the pitch with the right kind of energy, made few quality plays and is starting to look increasingly healthy. Blaise Matuidi held his own out of position, but the two fullbacks overall did not push much as they were the ones under the most pressure due to the width of the opponents.
Cristiano Ronaldo (6 points): a perfect night for the front-line as the three strikers all made it to the stat-sheet. The Portuguese star had an absurd miss, but atoned with two dazzling assists and another successful penalty. Paulo Dybala buried the second rocket in a row, perhaps even prettier than the one against Bologna, right in the top corner, and breaking the deadlock is always the biggest challenge in this type of fixtures. Gonzalo Higuain came back in style by smashing it under the bar. Federico Bernardeschi was not as good as in the last outing, instead Douglas Costa looked impressive and busted out some of his tricks and Beep Beep-like runs. Perhaps the emergence of some real competition for minutes contributed to putting a pep in his step.
