Serie A Fantasy Predictions – Round 17

ACF Fiorentina v AC Milan - Serie A

Lazio-Cagliari: after four draws in a row, the Biancocelesti came a cropper in Bergamo, following another subpar performance. The Sardinians have been unable to win in the past six weeks and they caught on Sunday their first L at home versus Napoli. So both teams are reeling, one more of the other considering their seasonal targets. Simone Inzaghi is giving Sergej Milinkovic-Savic every opportunity to get off his schneid, but he keeps misfiring. Luis Alberto is showing some signs of life, but he is far away from last year’s level of brilliance. So Ciro Immobile and Joaquin Correa remain their only two productive fulcrums, with Marco Parolo at times able to chip in. Continue reading

Fiorentina Bounce Back In Style

No wins since the end of September. A problem with scoring goals from open play. A number of key players out through suspension. A home match versus local rivals. This was the situation that faced under-pressure Fiorentina boss Stefano Pioli before last Sunday’s match with Empoli, and to make matters worse, the Viola were already 1-0 down after just 23 minutes.  Continue reading

Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 16

milik

Standings implications: Juventus squeezed past Torino in the Derby della Mole, but Napoli maintained the distance with a late gem in Cagliari. Inter continue to rack up home wins as Udinese were their latest victim. Atalanta edged Lazio, confirming their high ambitions for the season. Roma prevailed in a rollercoaster of a game versus Genoa. Fiorentina and Sassuolo were able to pop Empoli and Frosinone, snapping out of their lengthy droughts. Sampdoria also got a win down in the Europa League morass. SPAL and Chievo shared the spoils in a more intense match than what the result indicates. Continue reading

Serie A Match of the Round – Sassuolo vs Fiorentina

sassuolofiorentina

Plenty of pathos in the last Serie A round: Cagliari-Roma and Lazio-Sampdoria would have been worthy candidates for match of the week, but then Sassuolo-Fiorentina outdid them on Sunday.

Both teams came into the game pretty desperate for a win: the Neroverdi had prevailed just once in the previous eight fixtures, while La Viola last grabbed the full three points for the last time in late September. With Kevin-Prince Boateng out with an injury, Roberto De Zerbi used his best XI, with Khouma Babacar spearheading the front-line, Federico Di Francesco on the left wing and Stefano Sensi as deep-lying playmaker. Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 15

Standings implications: Juventus sank Inter in the most anticipated game of the round, while Napoli wiped out Frosinone, maintaining the distance from the top spot and gaining ground on the Nerazzurri. Both Roman teams were incredibly pipped at the post against Cagliari and Sampdoria and Fiorentina tied the game late versus Sassuolo. Milan and Torino shared the spoils, so the only team prospering in the Europa League zone was Atalanta, which upended Udinese on the road. Among the relegation strugglers, Empoli keep soaring with the third win in the last month, this time over Bologna. Genoa showed grit in the one-one tie with SPAL in Cesare Prandelli’s debut. Fiorentina Must Fix Their Attack

It’s easy to think Fiorentina’s 1-1 draw at the Stadio Artemio Franchi versus AS Roma was a fantastic result when viewed in isolation. It meant the Viola remain unbeaten at home and are currently five points behind 4th place, a finish that would secure Champions League football for next season.  Continue reading

Marko Pjaca And Mystery “Stomach Trouble” At Fiorentina

It is clear that Croatia international Marko Pjaca possesses the kind of natural talent that would not normally allow a club like Fiorentina to secure his services. Signed by Juventus – a team with a proven track record for acquiring excellent players – for €23 million from Dinamo Zagreb in summer 2016, the Bianconeri clearly expecting him to break into the first team at some point.  Continue reading
