Two contrasting styles will take to the Fisht Olympic Stadium on Saturday as Uruguay face Portugal.

Both have their merits and weaknesses and as the stakes get higher, we could be in for one of the games of the tournament so far.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be keen to continue his goal scoring form from the first couple of group games, and his prowess in front of goal could well be needed if Messrs. Suarez and Cavani are in the mood for Uruguay. Continue reading

Quaresma shows a good, bad and ugly side

For long periods of their game against Iran, Portugal were up against it.

Not quite under the cosh, but there was enough to suggest their opponents were worthy of a goal.

That his side’s finishing was off for the most part won’t concern Fernando Santos, who will just be delighted to see his side qualify for the Round of 16.

A late VAR intervention denied them top spot in the group and they’ll play arguably the tougher opponents in Uruguay. Continue reading

World Cup 2018: Fernando Santos looking to Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani to recreate Portugal’s Euro 2016 glory

Next up in our look ahead to the World Cup in Russia this summer, it is the turn of European champions Portugal to rest under the spotlight. Having surprised many by winning the Euros in 2016 after a relatively sub-par tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo and company will be hoping they can build on their momentum and carry a great showing to the biggest tournament in football. Their 35 man preliminary squad features many stars who played in that title winning campaign two years ago, including Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Nani  and goalkeeper Rui Patricio. Having won their previous major tournament, Fernando Santos’ men will have the expectations of a nation raised quite considerably this time around. Renato Sanches, however, misses out.
