Real Madrid seeking to set new records

A number of clubs have laid claim to the title of the world’s biggest club down the years, but with a record 11 Champions League (European Cup) trophies to their name, it’s difficult to argue with Real Madrid’s case for being top dogs.

In addition, Los Blancos have also won 33 La Liga titles, 19 Copa del Rey trophies, two FIFA Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and two UEFA Cups among a host of other trophies.

More silverware seems destined for the Santiago Bernabéu this season, with another La Liga title now in the bag following their 2-0 win at Malaga on Sunday and a Champions League final against Juventus on 3rd June, in which they will be aiming to be crowned European champions for a 12th time and to become the first club to successively defend the trophy since it was re-branded in 1992.

Record-breaking striker Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t had the most consistent campaign by his phenomenal standards, but he seems to be peaking at just the right time with 13 goals in his last eight matches.

Real Madrid can be backed at 6/4 (2.50) to win the Champions League final in 90-minutes with Coral or 4/5 (1.80) with the same bookmaker to lift the trophy (i.e. including extra-time and/ or penalties if required). Two trophies are already in the bag this season, with Real securing the FIFA Club World Cup back in December with a 4-2 win against Kashima Antlers (courtesy of yet another Ronaldo hat-trick).  The league title was won on Sunday while another European crown can be added to that in early June 2017, which could turn this into unquestionably one of Real Madrid’s most successful seasons ever.

As many clubs have discovered, it’s never easy securing a domestic title after the mid-term interruption of the FIFA Club World Cup on the other side of the world, so Zinedine Zidane and his charges deserve the utmost respect for maintaining their form, including a club record 40 match unbeaten run in major competitions that dated back to last season.

Although Ronaldo is still, at the age of 32, the undoubted leading light in the team, the likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić are all stars in their own right. Gareth Bale has had a frustrating season with injuries, but others have stepped up, particularly Isco who made himself almost immune from being benched as the season went on.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that Real have not had it easy in the Champions League this season either, having been drawn in the same group as Borussia Dortmund and then having had to face Napoli, Bayern Munich and city rivals Atlético in the knock-out stages.  If they can overcome the considerable talents of Juventus, nobody can deny that they will be worthy champions.
