Serie A Midfielder Club Review – Atalanta

Atalanta-Gomez

Atalanta’s wonderful season may have provided a solid building block for next season’s ambitions, but there is still much to be done. The defence has been hugely impressive, but their attacking threat has appeared somewhat more limited perhaps than those sides that finished around them in the higher echelons in the league. They did still average almost two goals scored per game though – 62 goals from 28 games.

While the strikers did of course play a large part of that – we will discuss that in another article – the forwards will seldom thrive on their own without a good line of supply from the middle of the park.

That is why we will now be taking a look at Atalanta’s midfield, and see how they did – at least in terms of the EuroFantasyLeague scoring system!

The big hitter of the midfield this season was Alejandro Gómez, with 112 points scored. He has been gradually increasing his influence over the course of the season – a fact that is backed up by the fact that 1% included him in their squad at the end of the campaign. That is a rise of 0.09% as the season progressed.

With his valuation at only 5.00m, that gives him a Price / Performance (P/P) score of a whopping 22.8. 16 goals also says that he was easily the star of Atalanta’s midfield!

That P/P score is amongst the best in the entire Serie A, and the whole EuroFantasyLeague game. Indeed, it ranks him as the 14th best player our fantasy managers could have had in their squad, and the third best midfielder. That isn’t a bad performance at all!

Trailing behind Gómez by some distance were Remo Freuler and Jasmin Kurtic, with 53 points apiece. The difference between these two was actually their P/P score – Frueler is valued at double the price of Kurtic, giving them P/P scores of 7.9 and 15.7 respectively. From that end, Kurtic would have been a wonderful inclusion for our fantasy managers – with 1% of players enjoying his services.

Leonardo Spinazzola came next with 34 points gleaned from 30 appearances. A couple of bookings hindered his overall score slightly, but considerably less so than the aforementioned Frueler and Kurtic, who had five and seven respectively. Spinazzola didn’t manage a goal all season though, which really held his point scoring potential back.

Bryan Cristante, Marco D’Alessandro and Alberto Grassi were the next best performers with 26, 20 and 16 points respectively. Cristante was cheap at half the price at only 2.50m, though, with the others coming in at 5.00m and 5.50m, giving him a nice P/P of 11.2.

Anthony Mounier, Giulio Migliaccio, Aleksandar Pesic and Cristian Raimondi earned a few points each, but were used rather sparingly in the first team. Don’t be too disheartened though – they could well kick on and start challenging Gómez and company for a more regular starting berth next season.
