Serie A Club of the Week – Round 25: Roma

Udinese - Roma

The Serie A club of the week for Round 25 was Roma thanks to their road win against Udinese. The Giallorossi were one of the three teams to win two-nil in the last weekend and they get the nod here because their fantasy haul was more conspicuous than Genoa’s and they faced better team compared to Lazio.

Eusebio Di Francesco confirmed the relatively new 4-2-3-1 and did not rotate the squad much despite the upcoming Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk: Aleksandar Kolarov was the only one rested, replaced by Juan Jesus. Stephan El Shaarawy won the duel with Diego Perotti to start on the left wing, Lorenzo Pellegrini started in the midfield over Kevin Strootman and that is becoming a trend.

The first half was pretty balanced, with a pair of good chances for each side: Udinese came close to scoring with robust strike from distance by Seko Fofana, while an attempt by El Shaarawy in the box whistled close to the post. Under was again the most active forward and his sudden moves make him pretty much uncatchable for defenders.

Roma were saved a couple of times by Alisson brilliantly coming out of the goal, first on a Juan Jesus’ poor backwards pass in the first half and then on Stipe Perica at the beginning of the second one.

The opening goal by the Giallorossi came pretty much out of the blue: Cengiz Under got free outside of the box, had time to aim and smashed home a lefty screamer, so powerful that Albano Bizzarri had hardly time to stab his arm out before the ball got past him.

After Alisson parried away an attempt by Rodrigo De Paul, Roma closed the game in the stoppage time, with Radja Nainggolan feeding Diego Perotti in the box and El Monito all alone finishing with aplomb in front of the goalkeeper.

The Wolf collected the third straight win and appears to be completely healed after last month’s swoon. The three points allowed to leapfrog Inter and re-claim the third position.

Many players chipped in fantasy-wise: Alisson was the top earner with seven points thanks to the clean sheet, which also gave the rest of the backline five points. Under and Perotti garnered six thanks to the goals, Nainggolan and Daniele De Rossi got four because of their assists, even though the one awarded to the Italian veteran was pretty generous, and all the other midfielders received two because they did not concede.
