Serie A Goalkeeper Club Review – Bologna

You may have already seen the start of our Serie A club review series with our coverage of the performance of Atalanta’s players this season (in case you missed them, here are the goalkeeper, midfielder and striker reviews). Well, as you may have already guessed we aren’t ordering these articles by final league position, but simply by alphabetical order. That should prove a big hint about which club we are starting off covering next!

Of course, you may have also already looked at the title of the article. So as a huge surprise (said no one ever) we now begin our look at Bologna, who finished 15th in Serie A this season. That wasn’t a bad result really, though they did manage one place higher in the previous campaign.

Of course, a big factor when looking at teams nearer the lower end of the table is often the goals they have shipped. It is perhaps fitting, then, that we take a look at their goalkeepers here. To be fair, before we see how well their custodians performed in the EuroFantasyLeague game this season, their defensive record wasn’t too bad given their position. They conceded 58 all season, but that was less than a fair few sides that finished above them, not least Torino who managed to take ninth.

I Rossoblu enjoyed two goalkeepers over the course of the season, and their appearances were more split than many clubs tend to implement.

The bigger of the points scorers was easily Antonio Mirante, who featured slightly more than 21 starts. The 33-year-old, who started his career at Juventus, was valued at 7.00m. That price tag didn’t stop him being literally an infinitely better choice for our fantasy managers out of the two stoppers, though – more on that in a moment.

Mirante kept eight clean sheets from those 21 appearances, which isn’t a bad return for a club struggling in the lower echelons of the league! The lowlight of Mirante’s season was certainly featuring in the 1-7 home defeat to Napoli back in February – that match yielded -12 points for him. The clean sheets helped him massively of course, as did his avoidance of getting his name added to the referee’s book – not a single booking all season. His Price / Performance score of 2.0 isn’t great by any standards, but still made him easily the better choice as far as Bologna keepers go.

Compared to Mirante, Júnior Costa had a bit of a nightmare. 17 starts and a single sub appearance managed this season, but he only managed to keep a single clean sheet. He only conceded one goal less than Mirante from fewer appearances, and kept just one clean sheet. Unfortunately for Costa, many of the matches in which he featured involved conceding at least two goals – many points were lost from heavier defeats.

Despite being valued at just 1.50m – which should make him worth consideration in any fantasy team – his points total of -24 made him one of the worst options out of all goalkeepers in the game. His P/P score of -17.3 reflect that this is a season he will be desperate to try and forget.
