EPL Best XI – Romelu Lukaku leads the line

Romelu Lukaku

The fourth weekend of the 2018-19 Premier League season saw Liverpool, Chelsea and Watford maintain their winning starts, while Manchester United responded to their 3-0 loss against Tottenham by beating Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor. But which players stood out to make the EPL Best XI of the Weekend?

GK: Rui Patricio, Wolves – seven points
Summer signing Rui Patricio picked up his first clean sheet as a Premier League goalkeeper in Wolves’ 1-0 win at West Ham on Saturday. The Portugal international earned seven points, moving him on to three points for the season.

DF: Cedric Soares, Southampton – seven points
Rui Patricio’s international teammate Cedric Soares makes our XI after helping Southampton keep a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace. He also recorded an assist in the match, making him the highest-scoring defender of the weekend.

DF: Chris Smalling, Manchester United – five points
Manchester United needed their defenders to be on top form after Monday’s calamitous second half against Tottenham, and Chris Smalling proved why Jose Mourinho kept faith in him with a good display in the 2-0 win over Burnley.

DF: Willy Boly, Wolves – five points
After earning four points for his controversial goal against Manchester City last week, Willy Boly went one point better this weekend by helping Wolves keep a clean sheet in their impressive 1-0 victory at West Ham.

DF: Marcos Alonso, Chelsea – six points
Another week, another Best XI appearance for Marcos Alonso. The Chelsea left-back picked up six points after grabbing an assist and clean sheet in the 2-0 win against Bournemouth. Andrew Robertson (19) is the only defender with more points than Alonso (16) this season.

MD: Eden Hazard, Chelsea – six points
Eden Hazard didn’t even start Chelsea’s first two games of the season but he already has 16 points in 2018-19 – the second-highest midfield tally. A goal and clean sheet against Bournemouth earned him another six points.

MD: Pierre Hojbjerg, Southampton – six points
Pierre Hojbjerg was one of the most surprising high scorers from this weekend. Like Hazard, the midfielder scored and kept a clean sheet in Southampton’s 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, moving him on to four points for the season.

MD: Sadio Mane, Liverpool – four points
It’s no wonder that 45% of EPL Fantasy managers have selected Sadio Mane in their team – the Liverpool man is on fire this season. He scored again in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Leicester, making him the highest-scoring player (22 points) in the entire league.

MD: Raheem Sterling, Manchester City – four points
After failing to pick up any points last week, Raheem Sterling got back on track this weekend with a goal in Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Newcastle. The England international now has nine points for the season.

ST: Glenn Murray, Brighton – seven points
Season after season, Glenn Murray has scored goals no matter what level he is playing at, and 2018-19 is no different. He netted both Brighton goals in the 2-2 draw with Fulham, earning himself an impressive seven points.

ST: Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United – seven points
It’s been a poor start to 2018-19 for Manchester United but at least Romelu Lukaku has found his shooting boots. The Belgian scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Burnley, taking his tally for the season to 11 points.
