EPL Best XI – Riyad Mahrez leads the way

Riyad Mahrez

The sixth weekend of the Premier League season saw Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea maintain their unbeaten starts to the campaign, while Burnley picked up their first three points of 2018-19 with a 4-0 win over Bournemouth. Let’s take a look at which players made our Best XI of the Weekend.

GK: Petr Cech, Arsenal – seven points
With eight teams keeping clean sheets this weekend, EPL Fantasy managers picked up plenty of points from goalkeepers and defenders. Petr Cech was key in the first half of Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Everton, earning himself seven points.

DF: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool – seven points
Liverpool weren’t even at their best against Southampton but they still ran out 3-0 winners at Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold continued his fine start to the season with an assist and a clean sheet, picking up seven points.

DF: James Tarkowski, Burnley – five points
Despite Burnley’s rocky start to the Premier League season, James Tarkowski has still been a reliable earner of EPL Fantasy points. He helped his side keep a clean sheet in the 4-0 win against Bournemouth, taking his tally to 11 points for the campaign.

DF: Joel Matip, Liverpool – nine points
Joel Matip was given his first Premier League start of 2018-19 in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Southampton. He scored a goal and helped the Reds keep a clean sheet, making him the highest-scoring defender of the weekend.

MD: Riyad Mahrez, Manchester City – 10 points
It took a few games but Riyad Mahrez looked right at home in Manchester City’s midfield on Saturday. The Algerian scored two goals in the 5-0 win over Cardiff, meaning he collected more points than any other player in Week 6.

MD: Ilkay Gundogan, Manchester City – eight points
Manchester City’s midfield ran the show in the victory at Cardiff. Ilkay Gundogan only played 69 minutes of the match but he still had enough time to score one goal and set up another, earning himself eight points.

MD: Bernardo Silva, Manchester City – eight points
Bernardo Silva completes the trio of City midfielders in this weekend’s XI. Like Gundogan, he scored one goal and recorded an assist, moving onto an impressive 16 points for 2018-19 so far.

MD: Aaron Lennon, Burnley – eight points
The second of three Burnley players in this XI, Aaron Lennon was back to his best on the left side of midfield against Bournemouth. The former England man collected eight points thanks to his goal and assist in the 4-0 win.

ST: Ashley Barnes, Burnley – eight points
When Ashley Barnes came on as a 69th-minute substitute against Bournemouth, nobody would have had him down as a Team of the Week contender. However, the striker made an instant impact, scoring two goals to pick up eight EPL Fantasy points.

ST: Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester – six points
Kelechi Iheanacho followed up his assist against Bournemouth last week with a goal and another assist in the 3-1 win over Huddersfield, earning himself six points on his first home start of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

ST: Jamie Vardy, Leicester – six points
Jamie Vardy failed to make an impression on his return from suspension last week. This week, however, it was a different story, as he collected six points with a goal and assist against the Premier League’s bottom club, Huddersfield.
