Wanda jumps to Icardi’s defence and confirms he will pen new Inter deal

Mauro Icardi’s agent-wife has spoken to Mediaset television programme Tika Taka regarding her husband’s future, confirming that he is set to sign a new contract which will see him remain at Inter this summer and beyond. Wanda Nara also defended MI9 against accusations that he did not do enough to help his teammates as they struggled to break down a stubborn Sassuolo defence at San Siro on Saturday night. Here is what she had to say:

“Mauro isolated on Saturday? Yes, it can happen but it’s said that he’s always the culprit. He’s there, he’s used to it, he’s the captain. Games like these happen, but the rumours about his renewal haven’t destabilised him. A champion like him doesn’t feel any pressure. He can be very cold and these things don’t bother him. Neither Mauro nor I have ever asked for anything. The problem is that I’m always seen as the idiot.

“When the club decide it’s the right moment to call us, we’ll answer and sit down with them. There’s a real possibility of him staying at Inter for a long time. An appointment soon? I’ve received positive signals, so I hope it can be an important week: my phone is on and for me he’ll renew 100 per cent, even if I haven’t talked to anyone yet. I don’t like hearing people say Inter’s dressing room depends on Mauro’s renewal because it’s the same as saying Inter are a weak club and that’s not true at all. My Inter song? Suning didn’t let me sing it.”

Indeed, Nerazzurri CEO sport Beppe Marotta also made it clear that he fully expects Icardi to put pen to paper on a new contract prior to the aforementioned match against Roberto De Zerbi’s impressive Neroverdi side. Earlier this month, Wanda appeared to be at odds with the club after making it clear that the likes of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are all interested in securing his services. However, relations have since thawed and it would seem that negotiations will now be a mere formality.

The news comes as a welcome boost to the whole club as Marotta and chief sport officer Piero Ausilio will be able to concentrate their efforts on strengthening the squad in other areas. The last thing anyone at Inter needs is for coach Luciano Spalletti to be deprived of his one and only guaranteed source of goals, therefore the powers that be should now do all they can to ensure players are brought in who can provide Icardi with a better supply of chances.

As potent a finisher as he is, there is only so much a striker can do when their teammates create so few clear-cut opportunities in front of goal as Inter did at the weekend. That said, finding someone who can put the ball in the back of the net is often the most difficult task for any football club, which is why Icardi’s commitment of his long-term future to Inter should come as a relief to all concerned.
