Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 23

marti

Standings implications: Juventus’ led atop of the table swelled up again as the Bianconeri routed Sassuolo, while Napoli could not break through in Florence and had to settle for a nil-nil tie. Inter returned to winning ways in Parma after three rounds. All the teams involved in the Champions League race won this week: Milan outfaced Cagliari, Roma did the same with Chievo on Friday, Atalanta successfully came back at home versus SPAL and Lazio squeezed past Empoli. Sampdoria lost steam in the Europa League zone with the second loss in a row, an appalling one to Frosinone in this case, while Torino are now eighth after nipping Udinese. Frosinone’s victory drags few more clubs into the mud: there are six teams in six points, with two going down. Bologna was the only other side that brought home a relatively positive result in those neighborhoods as they tied with Genoa.

Confirmations: Cristiano Ronaldo dished out some punishment in Sassuolo, scoring and assisting once, and Krzysztzof Piatek found the target once again. Duvan Zapata’s absence for the box scores was a very short one, as he decided the tricky fixture against SPAL with a goal and an assist for Josip Ilicic, who potted his seventh of the season. Stephan El Shaarawy and Aleksandar Kolarov have been fantasy stars all year long and tacked one more goal to their seasonal tally against Chievo, while Edin Dzeko is finally picking it up in Serie A play and scored his third in the last three fixtures. Felipe Caicedo gave his best Ciro Immobile impersonation and drilled penalty on Thursday. Andrea Petagna once again punished his former team, Atalanta.

Guess who is back: Mattia Destro was finally able to put his name in the scoresheet after a one-year absence. Daniel Ciofani had not bagged one in two and a half months, but he propelled Frosinone to another road upset on Sunday. Sami Khedira had not net one since the season opener, mostly because of injuries. Lucas Paqueta coronated his good moment of form with a goal against Cagliari.

Surprise scorers: Lukas Lerager bagged his first Serie A goal with Genoa with a header on a corner kick. Ola Aina found his first goal with the Granata in similar fashion but on open play. Emre Can buried his second with Juventus.

Flops of the round: Napoli and Dries Mertens in particular were too wasteful against Fiorentina, while Sampdoria had no juice whatsoever against the Ciociari. Rodrigo De Paul missed another penalty. Chievo and Cagliari were merely cannon fodder for Roma and Milan, while Sassuolo collapsed in the second half against Juventus.

Clutch goal: Lautaro Martinez finished properly this time and allowed Inter finally break through scoring wise in 2019 and garner a much-needed win versus Parma.
