EPL Best XI – Week 30

sterlingThis past weekend we saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his domestic unbeaten run as Man Utd manager, with Arsenal triumphing 2-0 at the Emirates. Elsewhere, Liverpool maintained pressure on league leaders Man City with their 4-2 win over Burnley at Anfield, and Southampton caused something of an upset by beating Tottenham 2-1 on the south coast. There were wins for Brighton and Cardiff, with Newcastle also putting in an impressive showing with their 3-2 home win against Everton. With that in mind, we will now adopt a 4-4-2 formation and see which players performed the best for their clubs in England’s top flight this past weekend.

GK – Bernd Leno (Arsenal)
Germany international Leno was one of only three Premier League keepers to earn a clean sheet this weekend, but his was arguably the most impressive considering the strength of opposition. He earned himself seven points, taking his season total to 13.

DF - Charlie Daniels (Bournemouth)
Daniels featured and put in an impressive display as the Cherries saw off hosts Huddersfield Town 2-0 in West Yorkshire. That clean sheet meant he and his fellow Bournemouth defenders each earned five points.

DF - Bruno Ecuele Manga (Cardiff)
Manga was solid as Cardiff recorded an impressive 2-0 home win against West Ham. The result lifts them to within two points of Burnley in 17th, and the safe spots. He earned himself five points through the clean sheet.

DF – Nacho Monreal (Arsenal)
The Arsenal defender featured for the full game as Arsenal beat Man Utd 2-0 at the Emirates on Sunday, giving him a seasonal total of 21 points from his 15 starts so far this campaign.

DF - Joe Bennett (Cardiff)
Much like team-mate Manga, Bennett earned himself five points from the clean sheet against West Ham. He did only feature for a little over an hour, but looked as solid as any of his team-mates throughout.

MF - Raheem Sterling (Man City)
Former Liverpool star Sterling showed his class as Man City saw off the challenge of Watford, winning 3-1. Sterling scored all three goals, earning himself 14 points from the match – four per goal and a two point bonus for the hattrick.

MF - Sadio Mane (Liverpool)
The first of two Liverpool midfielders to feature on this list, Mane earned eight points for his fantasy managers by way of bagging a brace in the club’s 4-2 home win against Burnley on Sunday.

MF – Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)
Firmino scored Liverpool’s other two goals in that game, thus notching up eight points of his own. That takes his season total to 86 – 11 points behind Mane.

MF - Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth)
Fraser becomes the second Cherries player to make this week’s list, with several impactful contributions earning him a final total of seven points for the week. He scored one, provided one, earned two for the clean sheet and lost one point for being booked.

ST - Ayoze Pérez (Newcastle)
Pérez sits joint-top of this weekend’s Premier League strikers charts after bagging two of Newcastle’s goals in their 3-2 win over Everton. The win was huge for the Magpies having come from 2-0 behind, with Pérez also assisting the team’s other goal, their first of the game scored by Salomon Rondon.

ST – Jamie Vardy (Leicester)
Jamie Vardy certainly impressed new manager Brendan Rodgers during Leicester’s 3-1 home win against struggling Fulham. Like Pérez he scored two and set one up to also earn himself 10 points, taking his season total to 49.
