Emre Can weighs in on the Atleti clash and Ronaldo only fined

Juventus v SSC Napoli - Serie A

Emre Can talked about the win over Atletico Madrid and the Cristiano Ronaldo controversy in an interview with Bild: “Tactically, I had never played in that position. We were constantly switching from a three-man to a four-man defense. It was a genius, chess player-like move by Massimiliano Allegri. He fully pulled off his plan. For the first time in the history of the club, we managed to come back after losing two-nothing in the first leg.”

“There was a lot of emotion in the locker room after the game, I had rarely experienced something like that. It is hard to understand from outside how much pressure we were under after the first match. There was palpable tension in the city in those 20 days in between. Few believed in us. We wanted to send a message to the world and let everybody know that we were still there. We want to win the cup.”

On Ronaldo’s celebration: “I do not want to comment his gesture. After what Diego Simeone did in Madrid, one like Ronaldo, considering his performance, is authorized to clap back and celebrate in whatever way he wants. We all know whom it was directed to. We have a nice relationship and I am super happy for his hat-trick because it was not easy for him in the first leg. He had to swallow few bitter pills and wanted to respond. The way he did it was incredible.”

“He is a very relaxed and down-to-earth guy, he does not have an ego, he is impressive. He is the first one to greet and thank you. He is like that also with the trainers and masseurs, not just with his teammates. People would be surprised to see how normal he is.”

Can was not called up by Germany this time: “My performances are judged differently from other players. I believed up until the last moment to be part of the World Cup squad, I played in the Champions League final. However, I stayed out for two months with a back injury, so I accepted the decision, even though I was disappointed that nobody from the national team’s medical staff checked up on me. My objective is to be a regular.”

UEFA made official their decision on Ronaldo on Thursday and the player avoided a suspension and got away with €20k fine, the same amount as Simeone after the first leg, and will therefore will be available against Ajax.
