Focus turns back to the EPL title race this weekend

Klopp and Guardiola

Like any good story, there are sure to be plenty more twists in the tale of the title race over the next seven weeks.

It’s looking very likely that the matter may only be decided on Sunday, May 12th, the final matchday of the Premier League season.

As we approach the end of the last international break during this league campaign, the players and managers at Liverpool and Manchester City will be gearing up for that final sprint.

They will know all too well that whoever can hit the ground running in the best possible manner this weekend will carry an advantage that may be hard for their opponents to overcome between now and May.

Since City’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle on January 29th, Pep Guardiola’s side has gone on to win six Premier League games in a row. They did this while also making the semi-finals of the FA Cup (despite a heroic effort from Swansea in the last round), the quarter-finals of the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup.

Yes, City are still going for an unprecedented quadruple. With the likes of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling still playing out of their skin, then who would bet against them?

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team started off 2019 with an unlucky 2-1 defeat against City at the Etihad Stadium. They then exited the FA Cup at Wolves with a weakened team selection. There was no doubt where Klopp’s priorities lay and he knew he couldn’t go toe-to-toe on all fronts with the size of The Reds’ squad compared to that of City’s.

Unfortunately for Klopp, Liverpool then drew four out of six Premier League games between late January and early March, allowing Guardiola’s men to retake first place in the league table.

However, Klopp’s men were not about to give up on the dream of bringing a first league title in 29 years back to Anfield this season.

Recent wins over Burnley and Fulham as well as a brilliant 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in Germany will no doubt help reinvigorate this Liverpool team.

While Mohamed Salah has lost his scoring boots, he’s still causing havoc and creating opportunities for others – something the in-form Sadio Mane can certainly attest to. Mane has 11 goals in his last 11 games for The Reds in all competitions.

Manchester City travel to play Fulham in London in the early kick-off this Saturday and then they face Cardiff City at home the following Wednesday night. It’s two games where they will be hotly tipped to pick up all six points.

Liverpool face a tougher task at home to Spurs this Sunday. Then they make their way to St Mary’s to play Southampton on Friday, April 5th.
