EPL Best XI – Week 33

chriswood

With another reduced number of teams in Premier League action this weekend due to the ongoing FA Cup competition, there were only a few sides to select from for this week’s “Best XI” – though there has been a nice spread of action, with games on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Everton continued their impressive performances against the big teams this season when they beat Arsenal 1-0 at Goodison Park, while Burnley earned a hugely impressive – and vitally important – away win at Bournemouth. Leicester and Crystal Palace also picked up wins on the road at Huddersfield and Newcastle respectively, while Liverpool’s Friday night trip to Southampton also saw them take the points. Let’s go for a 4-3-3 and see which players performed the best!

GK - Jordan Pickford (Everton)
Not for the first time in recent weeks the England custodian tops the Premier League keepers’ charts, keeping a great clean sheet at home against Unai Emery’s Arsenal. Big win for Everton, and a great outing for the former Sunderland stopper with seven points.

DF - Phil Jagielka (Everton)
Another Everton star to impress, Jagielka helped command his fellow defenders as the Toffees saw off the challenge of the Gunners. He scored the goal and his side kept a clean sheet, giving him nine points for the week and now 16 for the season.

DF - Ashley Westwood (Burnley)
Westwood‘s Burnley may not have kept a clean sheet, but he earns himself a spot in this week’s Best XI owing to the fact that he scored one and provided an assist, giving him six points from their 3-1 win at Bournemouth.

DF - Jeffrey Schlupp (Crystal Palace)
Schlupp is in the side with five points thanks to the Eagles’ clean sheet at Newcastle, where they won 1-0. A great win for the club and he would only set you back 4.00m on the game – a decent enough investment with 37 points so far this season.

DF - Patrick van Aanholt (Crystal Palace)
Joining Schlupp is his co-Eagle Patrick van Aanholt, who seems to be a regular feature in this weekly list. He also earned five points from the clean sheet at Newcastle, taking him up to 41 for the season for a 7.50m investment.

MF - Luka Milivojevic (Crystal Palace)
It’s a hattrick of Palace players on the bounce! Milivojevic was the top midfielder in the Premier League this past weekend with six points – four for scoring the only goal of the game and two for the clean sheet.

MF – Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
Another Jordan, and another ex-Sunderland player – Henderson was just pipped to the top spot by Milivojevic, with the Liverpool star earning five points from the Reds’ 3-1 win at Southampton on Friday night. He scored one and set one up, but lost one for being booked.

MF – Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield)
There were three midfielders who scored four points this weekend, with Naby Keita and Youri Tielemans the other two. Mooy is in there for his sheet doggedness for Huddersfield, scoring the Terriers’ only goal in their 4-1 home defeat to Leicester.

ST – Jamie Vardy (Leicester)
Jamie Vardy topped the Premier League strikers’ charts this weekend with eight points, taking his season total to 61. The former Halifax and Fleetwood striker bagged a brace in that 4-1 win at Huddersfield.

ST – Chris Wood (Burnley)
The second Burnley player on this week’s list, Wood scored six points thanks to a goal and an assist in Burnley’s win at Bournemouth. That takes him to 32 for the season so far, and he will hope to keep that momentum going and keep Burnley in the top flight.

ST – Shane Long (Southampton)
Despite Southampton being on the losing end against title-chasing Liverpool, Long sneaks on to this week’s list with four points as he scored Saints’ only goal.
