Juventus and Ronaldo break new records

Juventus improved some of their previous records and shattered some others by securing their eighth title in a row with a 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Saturday. They are the first Italian team to prevail for this many consecutive years, but they already held that since the closest domestic streaks stopped at five. However, it became the longest one in the top six European leagues, besting Lyon’s run in Ligue 1 that went on between 2002 and 2008. Bayern Munich’s top stretch finished with six, Real Madrid and Porto’s one at five, while there the historically stiff competition in Premier League limits the possibility to repeat, so the most productive team was Manchester United with three straight in two separate occasions.

Looking outside of the beaten path, the Bianconeri have a long way to go to tie the lengthiest, which belong to Gibraltar’s Lincoln and Latvia’s Skonto FC, which were able to be victorious for 14 championships in a row and the Old Lady’s feat only ranks 14th all-time.

They were the first team to clinch the Scudetto before Easter, but that is mostly becomes it comes pretty late this year as three other clubs had managed to seal the deal with five rounds to go: the ‘Great Torino’ in 1947, Fiorentina in 1956 and Inter in 2007. It would have been a record if they did not punt the SPAL game, but there were good reasons for that even though it did not work in the Ajax match.

They can at most tie Antonio Conte’s 102-point haul in 2013/2014, but the level of motivation in the final few games and the strength of the remaining schedule makes that unlikely. They can pull even also in terms of total wins, but they require five more, and have a shot the point gap one, 22 registered by Inter in 2006: they have a 20-point lead over Napoli as of now, but also played one more game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the only player to win the title the top three UEFA-ranked leagues: the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A. He triumphed three times in a row with the Red Devils in 2006/07, follow that up in Spain in 2011/2012 with Real Madrid and finished it off this season here in Italy. He has now won 28 trophies. Few other players updated their resume with one further notch: since Gianluigi Buffon and Claudio Marchisio left last summer, Giorgio Chiellini is the only one that has been here the whole time.
