Serie A Club of the Round – Roma

In a round that included just two shutout wins, by Roma and Milan, the Giallorossi got the best result of the week, even though they did not exactly dominate the clash with Juventus and were lucky not to go down in the score. Bologna had the most convincing display, but Parma’s consolation goal and the fact that they were gifted two own hauls did not make for a rich fantasy haul.

They had tied in Genoa the week before, letting Atalanta slip away in the standings. They have not lost since March 31st, winning four out of seven games.

Claudio Ranieri tilted his approach and went with an interesting tactic that saw Steven N’Zonzi as the lone pivot, sandwiched between Nicolò Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini, while Justin Kluivert started on the right wing, completing the trident that comprised Edin Dzeko and Stephan El Shaarawy as per usual.

La Lupa was saved by Antonio Mirante in the first half, where it defended pretty poorly, as the Bianconeri had two chances on counter-attacks: the goalie palmed away a Juan Cuadrado finish and a Paulo Dybala little curl. The Giallorossi had some room to gallop too and on the first try Pellegrini hit the woodwork on a botched cross, the Mirante found a way to deflect another Dybala strike on the post.

They came out of the locker room with more intensity, but could not conclude properly with Kluivert and El Shaarawy on their first two attempts on fast-breaks in the second half. On the other end, Mirante closed his legs in time to prevent Emre Can’s effort from zipping through them.

The Pharaoh again looked to score, but his long-range try was tipped over the bar by Wojciech Szczesny. With then minutes to go, Cengiz Under recovered a mistaken outlet pass by Giorgio Chiellini, Alessandro Florenzi and Dzeko quickly combined to slice the back-line and the right back lobbed it over Szczesny that was coming out of the goal.

The Old Lady did not have enough in the tank to reply and Dzeko rounded up the score at the 92nd minute on another counter, properly fed by Cengiz Under.

With the victory, Roma stay three points behind Atalanta and on a par with Milan, kept Torino behind and Lazio at a distance.

Antonio Mirante deservedly took home seven points and was followed by Florenzi, who amassed six with the contribution of the clean sheet, which also assigned five points to Kostas Manolas, Federico Fazio, while Aleksandar Kolarov was docked one for a yellow card. Dzeko collected five for the goal and the assist, as he was booked too, while Under tacked on two with the helper.
