Verona name Juric as their new coach

A successful late run that allowed them to snatch a spot in the playoffs and then go all the way was not enough to convince Hellas Verona to bet on Alfredo Aglietti in 2019/2020. They parted ways with him and appointed former Genoa coach Ivan Juric, whom they had reportedly decided to hire no matter where they would play, who has agreed to a one-year contract. The Gialloblù spent the last four seasons going up and down Serie A and Serie B.

Aglietti was hired with two matches to go, when the Scaligeri were on the outside looking in, and he managed to get them into the postseason and defeated Pescara and Cittadella to gain the promotion. He previously managed at Empoli, Novara, Virtus Entella and Ascoli, but likely paid the prize for his lack of experience in the top league. He had agreed to a short-term contract before taking over.

Juric had three separate stints at Genoa, the longest one when he was first appointed in 2016/2017, when he was sacked in February and recalled in April. They finished 16th that season. He was confirmed for the following campaign, only to be dismissed in early November since they had prevailed in just one of the first 12 games. He returned on the bench in October in the most recent season, but led the team just for seven winless fixtures. His total tally with Genoa amounts to nine Ws, 14 ties and 28 losses with a 0.8 point per game average.

Juric emerged onto the scenes in Crotone for a very aggressive 3-4-3, but in reality he has not shown much of note from a stylistic standpoint in Genoa. 3-5-2 was his go-to scheme in the most recent stay, but they will have to work on the roster to make it fit, as it is the case for most of the freshly promoted teams.

This year, they relied on the prolificacy of their centre-forward, either Giampaolo Pazzini or Samuel Di Carmine, on a serviceable wing game and on few goals coming from their midfielders, with Mattia Zaccagni and Liam Henderson leading the way there. Juric might have the opportunity to work against with Daniel Bessa, who was not redeemed by Genoa and had some marvellous seasons with the Mastini before moving away.
