Milan bring in Theo Hernandez from Real Madrid

Milan have added a new left back: on Saturday, League’s site made official the acquistion of Theo Hernandez from Real Madrid. The 21-year-old defender has been acquired for a reported €20M fee and inked a five-year contract.

Hernandez was on loan to Real Sociedad in 2018/2019, where he collected 28 appearances, scored once and provided two assists. The season before, he played 23 times with Los Blancos. He was purchased in 2017 from Atletico Madrid after his best campaign to date, at Deportivo Alaves, where he registered four assists and one goal in 32 matches.

The Rossoneri now have four left backs on the roster and so somebody will naturally be on his way out. Ivan Strinic did not play at all last season due to a heart condition and then an ankle injury. If they envision Hernandez being the starter, which is likely considering the price tag, then they will move on from Ricardo Rodriguez, who was serviceable but never overly impressive in his two years with the Devil. The Swiss international is very reliable in the back, but he is rarely a factor offensively: Hernandez is quite the opposite and should be a more constant presence while attacking, but he has to work on his discipline in order not to become a liability in the back. Diego Laxalt should remain in a back-up role.
