2 defenders who could join PSG this summer

Paris Saint-Germain allowed four first team players to leave on free transfers at the end of the 2019-20 campaign as they look to rebuild in their bid for European success.

The French Ligue 1 champions reached the Champions League final for the first time in their history last month only to be beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich.

Kylian Mbappe and Neymar disappointed in the final third, whilst Thilo Kehrer was exposed at right-back, which saw Kingsley Coman getting the better of the right-back to score the game’s only goal.

Kehrer himself may not have started the final but for Thomas Meunier’s departure to Borussia Dortmund at the end of his contract on 1 July 2020. Edinson Cavani also missed the final after his contract expired at the same time.

However, club captain Thiago Silva remained with the French champions until after the final before joining English Premier League giants Chelsea on a free transfer.

PSG’s only signing so far this summer has been Mauro Icardi from Internazionale, with the Argentine having already spent last season on loan from the Serie A side. Icardi will be the long-term replacement for Cavani after the Uruguayan’s seven seasons at the Parc des Princes.

Thomas Tuchel’s side start their 2020-21 Ligue 1 campaign this weekend away to RC Lens and have three games in seven days as they look to catch up on their competitors after being given an extended rest for their participation in the Champions League.

With the transfer window open until 5 October you can be sure that PSG will sign at least two defenders before that date. And these are the two defenders that are strongly being linked:

Hector Bellerin

The 25-year-old has been with Arsenal since 2011 when he joined from Barcelona’s youth academy. Hector Bellerin has gone on to make over 150 Premier League appearances for the North London club and earned three caps for the Spanish national team.

Bellerin spent much of last season on the sidelines with injury, whilst new manager Mikel Arteta has signed Cedric Soares from Southampton this summer, after initially bringing the Euro 2016 winner on loan in January.

PSG are being strongly linked with Hector Bellerin in a £25 million move this summer. With Arsenal failing to qualify for the Champions League and their manager looking to raise transfer funds, the Spaniard could certainly be on his way out of the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Milan Skriniar

PSG currently have Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos as options at centre-back following Thiago Silva’s departure but they will no doubt be looking to acquire another established player in this position, particularly with the Brazilian being moved into a holding midfield role these days.

Slovakia international Milan Skriniar has been a rock with Internaztionale for the past three seasons following a year at Sampdoria. The 25-year-old has been linked to the English Premier League on numerous occasions but a move to PSG could be more realistic.

With Juventus having a stranglehold on Serie A, Skriniar could feel a move to PSG would be a great opportunity to win domestic silverware for the first time since leaving his homeland, and put up a strong challenge for the Champions League too.
