Fantasy La Liga Gameweek 1 Picks

The 2020-21 Spanish La Liga season kicks off on Friday night with Granada hosting Athletic Club.

Defending champions Real Madrid have been given the opening weekend off due to their participation in the Champions League over in Portugal last month. Likewise, Barcelona, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid all have the weekend off. Elche and Getafe will therefore not be in action for week 1 either as they were scheduled to meet last season’s top two.

All eight games kick off at different times meaning fans can watch all of their fantasy players on TV. With that in mind, here are eleven players to consider for your first squad of the new season:

Goalkeeper: Sergio Asenjo
Difficult to call a clean sheet in the opening weekend particularly with none of the big teams in action. Villarreal didn’t have the best defensive record last season but they finished fifth and host Huesca on the opening weekend so Sergio Asenjo could be a smart choice.

Defender: Yuri
One of the top point scorers among defenders in fantasy La Liga last season, Yuri is priced at just 3.0m this season too. The Athletic Club left-back starts the new campaign away to Granada on Friday night, which won’t be the easiest place to keep a clean sheet based on last season, but doable.

Defender: Dimitri Foulquier
Granada were one of the surprise packages in La Liga last season as they qualified for the Europa League. Dimitri Foulquier arrived in January, initially on loan, before making the move permanent. If Granada are to keep a clean sheet on Friday night then this defender represents best value for money at 3.5m.

Defender: Yeray
Another value for money derfender for the opening weekend is Athletic Club’s Yeray. The centre-back will set you back just 2.0m and was one of the top point scorers last season.

Midfielder: Roberto Torres
Second place to Raul Garcia in the points scoring last season, Roberto Torres was both a playmaker and a goalscorer in midfield for Osasuna last campaign. Starting the season away to newly-promoted Cadiz and valued at just 5.0m makes him a sensible choice to put in your team.

Midfielder: Moises Gomez
Somewhat of a breakout player last season, Moises Gomez was involved in nine goals for a Villarreal side that finished fifth. He’ll set you back just 2.0m this season too and opens the campaign at home to Huesca.

Midfielder: Nabil Fekir
Eibar and Real Betis meet on Monday night. Two sides that narrowly survived, with only relegated Mallorca conceding more goals than both sides last season. If goals are coming in the season opener than Nabil Fekir should be among them.

Midfielder: Raul Garcia
He will set you back 8.0m but Raul Garcia scored 15 La Liga goals last campaign and with neither Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid nor Sevilla playing on the opening weekend then the midfielder may well be worth spending a good sum on.

Forward: Gerard Moreno
Gerard Moreno is coming off the back of his best season with Villarreal and starts the season at home to newly-promoted Huesca. With 18 La Liga goals last season he’s well worth 8.5m in gameweek 1.

Forward: Iago Aspas
Celta Vigo start the season away to Eibar in a game we can expect to see goals. Iago Aspas has been reliable for the visitors season after season so don’t overlook the striker at 8.5m.

Forward: Paco Alcacer
Only Barcelona and Real Madrid outscored Villarreal last campaign. They start the season with a game they are widely-expected to win, and whilst Paco Alcacer never hit the heights after signing from Borussia Dortmund in January, his 3.0m fee is worth taking a gamble on.
