Premier League: Best 11 Players of the Weekend: Matchday 2

The Premier League is leaking goals, there have been 56 so far and that means an average of 3.7 per match. Last season that average was 2.7, and it has certainly been a fun start to the season.

Another round of games have been played so let’s look at who made the final cut in the team of the weekend, did you have any of the players?

Formation: 4-4-2

Goalkeeper: Alisson- Liverpool 7pts

It wasn’t going to be long until we saw Alisson make the team of the weekend and it’s only taken the 2nd week. Alisson collected 7pts and kept a clean sheet away to title rivals Chelsea in an important win for the champions Liverpool. He made some saves and was ever a presence. This will be the first of many player of the weekend selections for the Brazilian.

Defender: Virgil van Dijk- Liverpool 5pts

There were only 2 teams who didn’t concede at the weekend one was Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk was at the heart of the defence once again to ensure the club kept a vital clean sheet away to Chelsea in their 2-0 win.

Defender: Dan Burn- Brighton 5pts

With so many goals conceded during the weekend defenders were taking the brunt of losing points and the best was just 5. Dan Burn starred for Brighton who like Liverpool did not concede any goals at the weekend. Brighton beat Newcastle 3-0 and Burn had an excellent commanding game at the back.

Defender: Andrew Robertson- Liverpool 5pts

Robertson can sometimes be the unsung hero of a brilliant Liverpool defence but he put in a great mature  and solid game again to help earn Liverpool a clean sheet.

Defender: Fabio Tavares- Liverpool 5pts

Fabio Tavares may not get as many games as he would like for Liverpool but he earned the points as part of their defence from midfield and manager Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a keen eye on the player after a good performance away to Chelsea.

Midfielder: Neal Maupay- Brighton 12pts

What a weekend it was for Neal Maupay, not only did his side Brighton beat Newcastle 3-0 he was involved in every goal. He scored a penalty after just 180 seconds and had grabbed a brace by the 7th minute. It was evident that this game was going to be a special one for him and he assisted in the clubs 3rd goal, easily the man of the match.

Midfielder: Sadio Mane- Liverpool 10pts

Cometh the man cometh the Mane. Another 2 goals for the Liverpool player and these were two very important ones that broke Chelsea’s resistance and saw Liverpool beat the Londoners 2-0 away. A fantastic victory for the champions who like like they are on a roll once more and Mane is going to be a big danger again this season.

Midfielder: James Rodriguez- Everton 6pts

James Rodriguez has only been playing for Everton for 2 games but has put in two very good performances. He earned 6 pts at the weekend as he scored a cracking goal in Everton’s superb 5-2 win over West Bromwich Albion. He then assisted in Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s last goal, which was a hat trick.

Midfielder: Wilfried Zaha- Crystal Palace- 8pts

A brilliant double for Wilfried Zaha scoring against his old club Manchester United. He slotted home a penalty and then scored late on to kill the game off as Crystal Palace stunned United at Old Trafford and won 3-1. Zaha now has 14pts and has started the season in incredible form.

Striker: Heung-Min Son – Tottenham 18pts

After having a quiet frustrating game on the opening weekend of the season Heung-Min Son showed his real qualities as he scored an incredible 4 goals for Tottenham who beat Southampton away from home 5-2. Son picked up an incredible 18 points and was absolutely relentless at the weekend.

Striker: Harry Kane- Tottenham 12pts

It’s a double for Tottenham up front with Son and Harry Kane taking the plaudits. It was really incredible team work to see Son score 4 goals but Kane set up all 4 and then score the 5th one, certainly Roy of the Rovers stuff, and Kane has had a superb weekend and bounced back from last weekend with a vengeance.
