Serie A Fantasy Recap – Round 23

Standing implications: Inter have seized complete control of the top of the table thanks to a resounding win over Milan in the Derby della Madoninna. Atalanta bested Napoli in the other cruch game du jour while Lazio had to sweat it out but they sunk Sampdoria. They are both closer to the fourth spot since Roma were held to a nil-nil draw by Benevento, while Juventus trampled Crotone. Verona was pipped at the post and forced to share the spoils with Genoa in a thrilling tie. Similar result between Sassuolo and Bologna, so the Europa League hopeful Scaligeri and Neroverdi lost some ground in the table. Fiorentina surprisingly man-handled Spezia to return to winning ways.

After few draws, Torino emerged victorious in the clash with Cagliari, leapfrogged the adversries and doomed Eusebio Di Francesco. Parma had a solid first half but could not finish off Udinese, which rallied back in the second half.

Confirmations: rinse and repeat as Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku once again willed Inter to victory and both hit the net. Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the Monday night game. Luis Muriel heaped misery on the Partenopei too. Dusan Vlahovic clocked in with an acrobatic goal. Francesco Caputo has officially caught fire. Bremer scored for the fourth time in the campaign, so he is no longer a surprise even though he is a defender.

Guess who is back: Luis Alberto and Duvan Zapata returned to the stat-sheet after a month. Three sleeping giants finally woke up as Gaetano Castrovilli had his finest performance of the season following some quiet months, Roberto Soriano finally scored to end a nine-game drought and Piotr Zielinski bagged a lovely goal versus Atalanta. Eldor Shomurodov too had not hit paydirt in a while, even though he had kept up his good performances. Andres Cornelius and Stefano Okaka both snapped out of their droughts on Sunday. Marco Davide Faraoni was very productive last season but, despite faring well in general, he had yet to come through with a goal in this ongoing one. Weston McKennie had not knocked one past the goalie in some time as well.

Surprise scorers: Valentin Eysseric and Cristian Romero found the target for the first time in the season, while Ivan Ilic tallied his second with a timely cut. Bram Nuytinck had not put one past the goalie in three-and-a-half years.

Flops of the round: second rough result in a row for the Rossoneri. Spezia followed up the great display versus Milan with an absolute dud. Kevin Lasagna had two incredible misses against Genoa. Sassuolo could not find a way to score twice against an undermanned Bologna team.

Clutch goal: Genoa’s horseshoe manifested itselt again as Milan Badelj fired it home from distance to equalize the Verona contest at the buzzer.
