Serie A Best Fantasy XI – Round 23

Lukas Skorupski (7 points): a solid week for defenses, as six of them managed to shut down the opponents, but clear top performance among goalkeeper was the Bologna one, as he blocked a penalty kick by Ciro Immobile with authority. It was a key turnaround of the game as his side broke the deadlock shortly thereafter. The Felsinei had some defensive troubles in the first half of the season but the rearguard and Skorupski improved tremendously in the last few rounds.

Matteo Darmian (9 points): no Achraf Hakimi in this round, but Inter still got goal from the right wing as the Italian fullback sealed the deal in the second half by shrewdly toeing the offside trap while Romelu Lukaku was doing his thing and beating the goalie with a sharp cross-shot.

Ibrahima Mbaye (9 points): Bologna are down to bare bones in the back, especially on the flanks, due to injuries and suspensions, but the back-up rose to occasion in a spot start, defending stingily in his area and more importantly tapping it home on a back-door cut to give his team the lead in the first half.

Cristian Romero (5 points): another dominant display for the Atalanta youngster, who won countless duels in the air and completely blanketed every attacker Sampdoria unsuccessfully threw at him.

Kevin Bonifazi (5 points): Udinese again mostly won it with tidy defending as they have gone back to the stingy identity that characterized them for few years. The young center-back managed to shackle down one of the hottest strikers in the League, Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic.

Robin Gosens (6 points): on top of being extremely productive for his role, he gives his team an edge with his determination, leadership and relentless pursuit of the goal. He bagged a pretty one versus Sampdoria, as he just barely latched onto the ball with a flying deflection to tuck home on a long cross. He is now up to eight goals in the campaign.

Dries Mertens (6 points): it did not take him a long time to produce after returning from a lingering ankle injury, as he found the target 20 minutes into the Benevento game with a gimme from point-blank range. Surely a welcomed return for the Partenopei given several key absences as, despite the acquisitions of Victor Osimhen and Andrea Petagna, he remains their most natural offensive linchpin.

Ruslan Malinovskyi (6 points): somebody had to step up for Atalanta with Duvan Zapata hurt and Josip Ilicic partially disciplined and the Ukrainian sharpshooter picked up the slack. He could have finished with a routine shot in front of the goalie after a lovely triangle with Luis Muriel, but he stayed true to himself and rifled it in the top corner with his cannon left-foot.

Joao Pedro (6 points): Cagliari managed to exploit the easy match-up with Crotone to finally return to winning ways in Leonardo Semplici’s debut and it is no surprise that their leader was involved, as he put the contest away by nailing a PK to notch his 12th goal in the season.

Emmanuel Gyasi (8 points): the Spezia speedster is not always the most clinical striker, but he made no mistake on Saturday, nudging home two crosses from inside the six-yard box where he found himself at the right place at the right time twice.

Romelu Lukaku (6 points): the Belgian star dominated once again, hitting the net mere seconds into the Genoa contest after ripping through the defense with an impetuous run and also orchestrating the Darmian goal in similar fashion, as he drew few defenders before perfectly teeing up the teammate.
