Stevan Jovetic: Ligue 1 player of the week

This week’s Ligue 1 player of the week accolade goes to Monaco centre forward Stevan Jovetic, whose goal scoring exploits in his side’s 4-0 win over Angers helped his side rise up to second in the table.

It’s fair to say that the striker from Montenegro has had a torrid time of it in recent seasons, struggling to settle at a club since his prolific five year spell at Fiorentina.

Having failed to make much of an impact at Manchester City following his €26.7 million move to the English super club, equally disappointing spells at both Inter Milan and Sevilla have seen him arrive on the shores of French football, fully aware that his move to AS Monaco could prove to be his last chance to make it at the elite level of the game.

Whilst injury has seen the 28-year-old fail to deliver the number of performances that he may have otherwise wanted at his new club.

However, when afforded opportunities to play, Jovetic  has shown glimmers of the exceptional skill level that he possesses – with him having bagged four goals in his ten outings thus far this season, winning eighteen points in the process.

His performance against Angers is a case in point of the valuable role that he can play for his new club.

The summer arrival, who is purported to have agreed a four year contract with last year’s champions, bagged his side’s second and third goals in their demolition of the relegation candidates, showing just how clinical he can be in front of goal.

His first strike arrived on the half an hour mark, when he rounded off a slick manoeuvre from the visitors with a delicate chip past the on-rushing Butelle to double his side’s lead – the keeper having scored an unfortunate goal ten minutes earlier.

With the game already in the hands of his side, Jovetic then put the result of the game beyond reasonable doubt when he stroked into an empty net in the 65th minute to give his side a three goal lead, Thomas Lemar having put the ball on a plate for him.

Raggi later rounded off the win with the side’s fourth of the match but there can be little doubt that the efforts of Jovetic stole the show.

With the talismanic Radamel Falcao out for the next three weeks due to a thigh injury, this could be the opportunity for Jovetic to stake a claim for a regular starting berth at Monaco.

The Colombian centre forward has netted an impressive 17 goals in 20 appearances this season, on his way to 69 points – if they can click then any future relationship between the two strikers could prove vital if the side is to re-emerge as a force at the top of the division.
