AC Milan gain important momentum ahead of derby clash

As they were set out to do, Milan grabbed all three points as they hosted Chievo on Sunday afternoon. With this being the Rossoneri’s third consecutive win, it seems Gattuso’s men have finally found their feet, gaining some much-needed momentum.

After a somewhat rocky start to the season, Milan have managed to pick themselves up, grabbing yet another victory today. In fact, much to the joy of the Rossoneri fans, it was a quite comfortable one as well, although the guests did manage to decrease the deficit to two goals. With that said, Donnarumma will have to wait a bit longer for his first clean sheet in the league this season.

However, even though the defence is still struggling a bit, the attack is looking better and better for each game that goes by. Higuain marked his performance today with his first brace for Milan, while Suso wasn’t any worse as he assisted all three goals.

The Bad

First and foremost, perhaps the best AC Milan player last spring, Hakan Calhanoglu, really needs to find his groove. As of late, he’s struggled to perform on the level we’re used to seeing him on, which has also affected his confidence. Luckily, he put an end to the point-drought against Olympiacos in the mid-week, grabbing two assists to help complete a comeback. However, during today’s game, he tended to get a bit lost at times, while also failing to put any real mark on the clash. As Gattuso has expressed, this is only a matter of time, as Calhanoglu arguably has the quality to perform on a world-class level.

In addition to the number 10′s issues, the defence really needs to minimize individual errors. Captain Romagnoli was injured today and Zapata replaced him in the lineup, which naturally led to a few rocky moments as the defenders weren’t always on the same wavelength. On the goal conceded, there was a huge gap between the two central defenders, even though Kessie should have arguably done better with the back pass. Furthermore, as shown so many times this season, the defenders seemed very shaky on a few occasions, even though they had a comfortable lead in the bag.

The Good

Suso and Higuain, as opposed to the defenders, were definitely on the same wavelength. Just like last season, the right flank works like a charm with Suso leading the pack. Only this time out, he has a proper goalscorer to feed. Higuain has now scored six times in seven appearances, three of which he has Suso to thank for. Furthermore, this is the Argentinian’s best start to a season in his career, certainly giving Rossoneri fans the feeling that they could be in for many more goals from El Pipita.

Abate had yet another good performance at right back, starting ahead of youngster Davide Calabria. It certainly seems like he’s received a confidence boost after his great showing against Sassuolo, as he did well to offer support both at the back and up front this afternoon.

More importantly, however, Milan have managed to gain important momentum and consistency ahead of the derby. In fact, the Rossoneri have won three consecutive games for the first time since February, meaning they are certainly on the right track.
