Standings implications: Juventus continue to dominate and notched their eighth straight victory in Udine, while Napoli topped Sassuolo at home. Roma and Inter extended their winning streaks in hard-fought matches against Empoli and SPAL. Lazio prevailed in the second-tier head-to-head game against Fiorentina. Sampdoria came away with a previous win from Bergamo, same for Parma, which staged a marvellous comeback against Genoa on the road. Torino and Cagliari nabbed two home Ws versus Frosinone and Bologna.

Confirmations: all the Serie A’s best striker did their thing this weekend. Krzysztof Piatek broke the deadlock with a header in the lunch match. Cristiano Ronaldo rifled one home against Udinese, Ciro Immobile found a clinical goal versus Fiorentina. Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi bagged a brace to propel their teams. Giacomo Bonaventura hammered one home and Suso provided three assists. Edin Dzeko has it going after the Champions League hat-trick and sealed the deal against Empoli with a confident finish. Cagliari studs Leonardo Pavoletti and Joao Pedro hit the net with two headers on Saturday. Camillo Ciano has pretty much been Frosinone’s lone offensive spark so far. Alberto Paloschi had his second goal in a row for SPAL.

Guess who is back: Daniele Baselli pounced on a rebound against Frosinone, putting his name in the scoresheets for the first time this season. Fabio Ceravolo had not scored in Serie A in eight years, mostly spent in the lower leagues, Luca Siligardi since April 2016. Luca Rigoni had netted his last goal last November. Sergio Pellissier rarely plays these days, but made it count on Sunday. Luca Tonelli had a very prolific year at Empoli before riding the pine in Napoli and helped Sampdoria defeat Atalanta.

Surprise scorers: Steven Nzonzi rarely attacks, but he buried a lovely header on Saturday night. Similarly to him, Tomas Rincon had not knocked one past the defender since last December. Rodrigo Bentancur generally has a tough time cracking the XI, but he made the most of his start against Udinese with a well-timed header. Adam Ounas had his first ever Serie A goal. Edoardo Goldaniga kick-started Frosinone’s comeback against Torino.

Flops of the round: Francesco Caputo skied a penalty and another clear-cut opportunity to equalize the Roma game. Mirco Antenucci missed from the penalty spot against Inter as well. Bologna have yet to score on the road thus far this season. Atalanta were shut out again, same for Fiorentina, but not for lack of trying in this case. The Goddess’ offence has been abysmal after the first couple of games.

Clutch goal: Alex Berenguer is playing better lately and he uncorked a gorgeous strike from distance to defeat Frosinone on Friday.
