AC Milan need to capitalize on golden opportunity against Genoa

This evening, AC Milan and Gattuso have a great opportunity on their hands, hosting Genoa at the San Siro. The encounter between the two sides was postponed back in August, and thus the Rossoneri could make a leap in the standings with a win.

Ahead of the game with Sampdoria, Milan were sitting in the lower half of the table with 12 points, in need of a win against Giampaolo’s side. Luckily, although they didn’t make it easy for themselves, the win was a sealed and the three points saw them move to fifth place, just behind Lazio in fourth with 18 points. With that said, the game this evening will be important in many ways for Gattuso’s men.

First of all, even though the win against Samp put them back on track in terms of results, the Rossoneri are still in dire need of confidence. Besides the likes of Cutrone, Higuain and Suso, the players are really struggling mentally, especially in the defensive phase. In fact, they have conceded goals in each of their last 15 Serie A games. Only once in their history have they gone longer without a clean sheet, courtesy of a 20-match run in 1946/47. Against Genoa, it’s about time to put an end to this negative run, and the players will need the right confidence in order to do so.

Now, moving on to the results, three points would see them surpass Lazio in the standings on goal difference, meaning a Champions League spot in once again something fans can dream of. For Gattuso, claiming a win this evening would be really important for his future with the club, as the criticism hasn’t been light in the last couple of weeks.

In many ways, this is what it all comes down to in the end. Even during the tough periods, the players have made it clear that Gattuso is the man to go forward with, although others have doubted their claims. Should they continue to win from here on, then their comments will certainly be justified. On the other hand, despite the rumours circulating, the club has made it clear that Gattuso won’t get sacked.

”Gattuso? The rumours about him come from sources outside of our environment, and they are considered unfounded. This is why we did not consider it necessary to deny them, because Rino knows that he has the full support of the club and management,” sporting director Leonardo stated.

Assuring words for Gattuso, although we all know that it will come down to the results in the upcoming months. After the game against Genoa, the Rossoneri will travel to Udine for an encounter with Udinese. Grabbing six points from these two games will be crucial, as it would set them up well for the game against Juventus in two weeks. However, with Milan, you simply never know. Hopefully, though, the team has put the negative spell behind them.
