Getafe prove no pushovers in race for LaLiga top four spot

Getafe

Getafe picked up a massive three points in the race for a Champions League place via LaLiga’s top four over the weekend.

The home side beat a Sevilla team on a run of three straight wins to leapfrog them back into 4th position. They are now two points clear of both Sevilla and other top-four hopefuls, Valencia.

Sevilla looked the most likely to score early on. Franco Vazquez put his volley onto the top of the crossbar and Wissam Ben Yedder forced a save out of David Soria minutes later.

VAR played its part, however. Franco Vazquez was penalised for a handball in the 33rd minute and Getafe’s Jaime Mata made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick.

Sevilla’s Sergio Escudero was booked for his protestations regarding Vazquez’s handball. Then, just before half-time, Escudero himself was guilty of a handball, gifting Getafe with another opportunity from the penalty spot.

Worse news for Sevilla was that Escudero also received a second yellow card for the handball and was then sent off.

This time, Jorge Molina stepped up for Getafe and made it 2-0 from 12 yards out.

Molina scored his second in the 53rd minute, pouncing from inside the six-yard box after great work down the right from Jaime Mata. It was 3-0 now and Sevilla, also a man down, were dead and buried.

Getafe defender Djene received a straight red card in the 74th minute after a VAR review of his dangerous tackle on Sevilla’s Jesus Navas.

It finished 3-0 on the day, giving Getafe back the advantage in the top-four race with just five gameweeks remaining.

Jorge Molina and David Soria were Getafe’s biggest fantasy La Liga points scorers, earning 8 and 7 points respectively.

Ignasi Miquel got 5 points while Leandro Cabrera and Bruno both got 4.

Djene ended with just 3 points after his red card and former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini was given 2 points for his game.

All of Sevilla’s points ‘scorers’ were in the negatives.

Escudero and Tomas Vaclik finished with -4 points apiece. Ibrahim Amadou and Gabriel Mercado lost -3 points each.

Simon Kjaer and Sergi Gomez both ended with -2 points with Franco Vazquez and Ever Banega finishing with -1 point each.

Next up for Getafe is another home fixture, this time against 16th-placed Girona.

Sevilla are at home to Leganes who currently sit in 12th position.

Valencia travel to bottom-of-the-table Huesca in their bid to get back into the Champions League places.
