Pragmatic Getafe keep Champions League dream alive

Getafe

Getafe remain on course for one the biggest La Liga success stories in recent seasons, with Jose Bordalas’ side firmly in pole position to finish fourth.

That would qualify them for the 2019-20 Champions League, for the first time in their 35 year history.

The side from South Madrid have remained out of the limelight for the majority of the season, only breaking into the Champions League spots in 2019, ahead of Alaves and Sevilla.

With 11 eleven league games to go in the La Liga season, Getafe have a four point cushion inside the top four in the Spanish top flight.

La Liga’s top picks for fantasy football this weekend

La Liga

All La Liga teams are in action this weekend so let’s take a look at the top fantasy La Liga picks for the upcoming games.

Starting on Friday evening, there are 20 La Liga fixtures to look forward to.

Goalkeeper – David Soria (Getafe) – 6.0 million

I’ve gone with Getafe’s David Soria for the goalkeeper spot. Getafe are at home to bottom team, Huesca, so a clean sheet is very much a possibility for Jose Bordalas’ side. Soria has 46 points this season.

Underdogs Getafe on course for Champions League finish

Getafe

Forget Barcelona being top of the league or the order of this season’s top three. Getafe are the current story of the season in La Liga – sitting fourth in the division and on course for a first ever appearance in the Champions League next season.

There are still 12 matches remaining, almost a third of the campaign, but as things stand, there will be three sides from the Spanish capital in Europe’s premier club competition for 2019/20. This would be a remarkable achievement on so many levels, with Getafe renowned as a club with a limited fanbase and with one of the league’s lowest budgets. Continue reading

Fantasy La Liga picks for the coming weekend

Antoine Griezmann

As we gear up for another action-packed weekend in La Liga, I take you through my suggestions for the top fantasy football picks in Spanish football.

In the defensive third this weekend, it’s difficult to look past Athletic Bilbao players as the team from the Basque Country have kept two clean sheets in a row and three in their last four league games, including a 0-0 draw at home to the mighty Barcelona.

Not only that, but Bilbao are at home to Eibar who have only won one away game all season while only scoring nine goals on their travels in La Liga.

Goalkeeper – Iago Herrerin (Athletic Bilbao) – 5.0 million

In goals, I’ve opted for Bilbao’s Iago Herrerin as it’s very possible another clean sheet is on the cards for his side. Herrerin is currently valued at 5.0 million and has a total of 40 points so far.

Getafe set for shock European return

Getafe

As La Liga enters it’s final stages of the 2018-19 season, the shake up for European qualification is beginning to take shape – with Getafe a surprise candidate to finish in the qualification spots.

The side from South Madrid have maintained their consistent form since December 2018, with just two La Liga defeats in their last 11 league games – against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Jose Bordalas’ side are currently in fifth place and in prime position to qualify for European football for the first time since 2011.

Getafe continue to defy doubters in La Liga

Getafe

It is easy to forget Getafe were only promoted to Spain’s top flight 18 months ago, via the convulted playoff system. Last season, Loz Azulones recorded an impressive eighth-placed finish – just one spot away from European qualification – and they are on course to repeat the feat this time round.

Since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, Jose Bordalas’s men have conceded just 45 goals across their 53 matches in La Liga. It is a remarkable record with only Atletico Madrid (32 goals conceded in that timeframe) holding stronger defensive numbers. Continue reading

La Liga Weekend Picks – Round 5

garcia3Last weekend’s La Liga action saw Girona recording a 3-2 home win against Celta Vigo in arguably the best of the action throughout the Spanish top flight, while Getafe did themselves plenty of credit with their 2-0 win at Sevilla. Real Madrid were held 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao, and Barcelona managed to scrape a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad despite performing far from their best. This coming weekend sees Barcelona welcoming Girona to the Nou Camp, while Real Madrid host Espanyol. Atletico Madrid have a trip to Getafe, while Eibar and Leganes do battle in a match surely worth keeping an eye on. With all that in mind, let’s take a look ahead and see which 11 players to monitor in the next round of matches.
