La Liga: Best 11 Players from the Weekend: Matchday 23

Formation: 4-4-2:

Goalkeeper: David Soria- Getafe 7pts

Getafe have been superb this season and David Soria was able to keep yet another clean sheet as the team beat Valencia 3-0. It was Soria’s 10th clean sheet of the season and it says it all that he is 3rd on the goalkeeping rankings list for La Liga.

Defender: Djene-Getafe 5pts

Djene has been brilliant in the heart of defence for Getafe who won 3-0 at the weekend keeping another clean sheet. Getafe are in 3rd place and with the help of their defence which has only conceded 20 goals this season they could be heading for the Champions League.

Defender: Stefan Savic- Atletico Madrid 5pts

Stefan Savic helped his team keep another clean sheet as Atletico win 1-0 at the weekend and that is his 7th clean sheet of the season, he would cost you 7m and is having a very solid term.

Defender: Mario Hermoso Atletico Madrid 5pts

Hermoso has built up a steady relationship with Savic in the Atletico defence and has been a real find this season as his team try to finish in a Champions League place.

Defender:  Tono- Levante 7pts

Tono earned big points for Levante after assisting in the clubs 2nd goal as they eased past Leganes 2-0. He also, of course kept a clean sheet for the icing on top of a very successful weekend for him and his club.

Midfielder: Sergio Canales- Real Betis 4pts

Sergio Canales was on the losing side as Betis were beaten by Barcelona 3-2 but he did open the scoring. Canales kept a cool head to convert a penalty and put his side in the lead after just 6 minutes before a Barca fightback. It was his 3rd goal this season and he has 20pts and is valued at 7.5m.

Midfielder: Takashi Inui-Eibar 4pts

Midfielder: Angel Correa- Atletico Madrid 6pts

Correra got the only goal in Atletico Madrid’s vital win over Granada. It was a tough game for the home side who were reduced to just 3 shots on target the whole game, so the midfielder really came through to get all three points.

Midfielder: Lucas- Real Madrid 4pts

Lucas did really well as he only came on for Real Madrid with just over twenty minutes to go and made an immediate impact scoring the 3rd goal for the club in a game they eventually won 4-1 against Osasuna. It was only his 2nd goal of the season.

Striker: Jorge Molina- Getafe 8pts

What has gone wrong for Atletico Madrid this season?

This was supposed to be the season where Atletico Madrid made their statement. A La Liga title was the objective. Quality players had been brought in, no less in Felix who cost over 120m euros,  and Diego Simeone looked upon as one of the best coaches in world football is still at the club.

It was a season where everyone thought Real Madrid are in transition. No matter if Zinedine Zidane is the coach, he left then came back, there is no Ronaldo, and times have changed, except for Real they haven’t and that is why they are currently top of the league. What about the threat of Barcelona? But they were thought to be maybe too long in the tooth, the same old tired midfield, Atletico happy to see Antoine Griezmann sold to them so they could get Felix, and surely from Atletico’s point of view they got the best years out of Griezmann anyway.

Then there is Lionel Messi, but he is 32 going on 33, the thinking from Atletico seemed legit, this was their time, except it wasn’t. As the season draws in they are 13 points behind Real Madrid and 10 behind Barcelona. And it gets worse than that, because they aren’t even in 3rd place, no Getafe currently hold that position, Getafe?, oh poor Atletico what went wrong?

Part of the problem seems to be uncertainty on and off the pitch. Saul Niguez has repeatedly been played out of position with Simeone insisting him to play in defence when he prefers to play in midfield as seen with the Spanish national side. Then there is Simeone’s assistant German ‘Mono’ Burgos who keeps getting linked away from the job- and it must be tempting for him to take on a full time coaches job elsewhere.

Felix as mentioned above is technically brilliant but the problem is his age. He has scored just 2 goals this season, that can almost be accepted if he is creating goals, but he has only been involved in one assist for the money paid that is a very poor return.

One player who has shone is Kieran Trippier who Atletico got from Tottenham. He has looked assured in defence and has made more assists than Felix which says a lot.

The game of course is all about goals and Atletico have scored just 22, that is 30 less than Barcelona and the same as Mallorca who are down in 17th place. The flip side of that is they have conceded 15 but they have won just 9 games from 22 played.

The worry for the club now is can they qualify for next seasons Champions League? Winning it this year will be hard given that they will play the current champions Liverpool in the knockout round. As far as qualifying through their league status they are just 3 points from 4th place so of course it is possible. But form really needs to get picked up as they have no wins in their last 3 games, their latest loss was a body blow too coming against city rivals Real Madrid.

Next weekend the club will play Granada at home, a game they should win but one senses like much of the their season they will somehow make heavy weather of it.

Top Premier League Goalkeepers in 2018/19: Vicente Guaita

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz(1)

Vicente Guaita finished 7th in the fantasy rankings for Premier League goalkeepers but he must have been amongst the very best value players to have in your team for season 2018/19.

Guaita was valued at just 2m as he kept guard in goal for Crystal Palace for 20 games and that was enough to have him easily placed in the top 10 goalkeepers in England.

Whilst Guaita only accumulated 23 points he also kept an impressive 7 clean sheets, keeping the score at zero for 35% of his games. He conceded 25 goals in his games and received 2 yellow cards.

Guaita had spent his career in the Spanish league up until he joined Palace last summer in a free transfer joining from Getafe after making over 100 appearances for the club. It was always thought that Guaita would be a back up for Roy Hodgson’s Palace team, which he was. He finally made his debut for the club in December almost half way through the season.

Guaita’s first match for Palace ended in a 1-0 victory for the club when they beat Leicester, in the process he kept a clean sheet in his first game and earned 7 points. His next game is simply unfortunate for a goalkeeper, as Palace pulled off an incredible 3-2 victory at Manchester City. But because he conceded 2 goals and got booked he ended that game personally with -3 points.

But Guaita bounced back earning 14 points from his next 3 games and his signing seemed completely justified by Hodgson even on a free transfer for the 32 year old.

He had a few matches he’s rather forget- the defeats against both Manchester teams yielded 6 goals shipped and as a result in those two games he lost 8 points. And then there was a poor run that begun in mid April to the end of the season. True this run also involved the keeper picking up 7 points after he kept a clean sheet against Everton in a match that finished 0-0. But also taking those final 5 game into account Guaita did not earn any points in 4 of those games and earned a total of -5 points in that period.

What could be taken from Guaita’s half season of games is that he rarely went many matches without earning points. And Palace greatly improved as a team in the second half of the season and Guaita was certainly a key reason for that. The Spanish keeper is set to remain at Palace for next season as he initially signed a 3 year deal with the Eagles and it sure that his value will rise here from 2m. A shrewd player may just surprise themselves by a next season purchase of him.

Getafe in need of squad boost for long 2019-20 campaign

Getafe

Getafe’s push for a Champions League spot at the back end of the 2018-29 La Liga season, was one of the biggest stories in the Spanish top flight.

Ultimately, Jose Bordalas’s side were pipped at the post by Valencia, with the side from South Madrid eventually finishing in sixth place, behind Sevilla.

However, despite the last minute stumble, Bordalas and his players still managed to bring European football back to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez for the first time since 2011.

Top LaLiga Goalkeepers in 2018/19 – David Soria

David Soria

Getafe’s David Soria has just finished the best season of his relatively young career to date. The former Sevilla goalkeeper played a huge part in helping Getafe to their best-ever LaLiga finishing position – 5th – in 2018/19.

The 26-year-old Spanish ‘keeper only signed from Sevilla last July for a bargain-basement cost of €3 million.

Soria went on to start 37 of Getafe’s LaLiga games, keeping 13 clean sheets along the way. He also saved two of the seven penalties he faced in the league during the season. Continue reading

Boss Jose Bordalas the only star at Getafe

Jose Bordalas

It is hard to believe that until August 2017, Jose Bordalas had never managed a match in the Spanish top flight. It was not for a lack of trying – he had been involved in management across a 25-year spell but had never been able to breach the top-flight. He was desperately unfortunate not to do so the previous year, when he guided Alaves to La Liga after a 10-year absence only to be dismissed after winning the Segunda title.

That was a decision which ultimately proved hugely beneficial not only to Alaves – who have impressed in three successive seasons in the Primera – but also to Bordalas, who has worked wonders at Getafe. He took the helm at Los Azulones in September 2016, with the club second-from-bottom in the Segunda and facing the prospect of further gloom and doom. Continue reading

Week 36: Best 11 Players of the Weekend in Fantasy La Liga

MINNNNNNNAAAAAAA(1)

It was a weekend in La Liga where Barcelona lost only their 3rd game of the season as coach Ernesto Valverde rightly rested the majority of his team ahead of the clubs 2nd leg semi final Champions League match against Liverpool. Barcelona have already won the league and Celta Vigo defeated the club 2-0 which in turn boosted their survival hopes for this season.

Atletico Madrid also lost but they will finish in 2nd place as Real Madrid will not be able to catch them. The real amazing story to emerge from Spain is Getafe who are still on course to finish in the top 4 and make the Champions League. Below we take a look at the best 11 players from this past weekend in La Liga- were they in your team?

Goalkeeper: Ruben Blanco- Celta Vigo

A few goalkeepers picked up 7 points but a lot of credit needs to go to Celta Vigo’s Ruben Blanco who was able to keep a clean sheet against the mighty Barcelona. Barca did not play their strongest team but even their second string is good enough for a top  4 place and Blanco did very well as his club won 2-0.

Defender: Dimitri Foulquier- Getafe

Getafe kept up their top 4 hopes and Champions League qualification dreams by beating Girona 2-0 at home. Foulquier assisted in the first goal and was part of a strong defence that also kept a clean sheet to earn 7 points. The player is valued at just 3.5m and is 11th in the rankings for defenders.

Defender: Jose Angel- Eibar

Jose Angel has just 25 points this season but 8 have been earned this past weekend as Eibar earned a 1-0 win against Real Betis. It was the clubs 2nd successive clean sheet of the season.

Defender: Damian Suarez- Getafe

Damian Suarez is part of Getafe’s defence who did so well to help his team keep yet another clean sheet and give them a 3 point gap to their rivals. It was a fantastic display. Suarez has earned 46 points this season and is valued at 7.5m.

Defender: Bruno- Getafe

Another Getafe defender, Bruno was amongst the best and earned 6 points this past weekend. He has 41 points and is valued at 6m and was simply a rock in defence.

Midfielder: Jose Campana- Levante

What a weekend for Jose Campana who earned 7 points but it could have been much more as his team won 4-1. He opened the scoring and assisted in 2 more goals, but failure for a clean sheet and then getting booked brought down his points. Still one of the players of the weekend in La Liga.

Midfielder: Enis Bardhi- Levante

Incredibly the midfielders of the league did not score many points to get into this team. Bardhi highlights this case with just 4 points earned as Levante won 4-1 at the weekend. Bardhi scored the fourth and last goal of his clubs vital victory and he can be bought for 7.5m.

Midfielder: Ryad Boudebouz- Celta Vigo

Veteran player Ryad Boudebouz was able to celebrate a very rare victory over Barcelona as Celta Vigo beat the champions. Boudebouz assisted in the opening goal and from there on in there was only ever going to be one winner. The player has amassed 18 points this season from 12 starts.

Midfielder: Gonzalo Melero- Huesca

Gonzalo Melero earned 4 points this past weekend as Huesca were destroyed at home 6-2 against Valencia. The only bright moment for the player is that he came off the bench and within minutes had scored for his club to give the home fans something to cheer about. Melero is valued at 6m.

Striker: Santi Mina- Valencia

Santi Mina was a sheer delight at the weekend and picked up a brilliant 12 points as Valencia beat bottom club Huesca 6-2 away from home. Mina scored 2 and then assisted in 2 and had pretty much the perfect game. Mina is valued at 7m and has scored 6 times this season, but recent form has been devastating.

Striker: Mariano- Real Madrid

The 25 year old Mariano started just his 5th game for Real Madrid as they beat Villarreal 3-2 and the player justified his selection by Zinedine Zidane by scoring two goals and helping Real to all three points. He is valued at 9m.
