Eibar shopping for bargains ahead of 2019-20 campaign

Eibar

Eibar are set to continue their pragmatic approach to purchases, ahead of the 2019-20 La Liga season beginning next month.

Jose Luis Mendilibar has established a reputation as a bargain hunter, during his four seasons in charge of the Basque club, and he will be building a La Liga campaign on a shoestring once again.

One key difference for the 2019-20 however, is that they will not have to sell a star name, in order to bring players to the club – as has been the case in previous years.

Mendiilibar has retained key players, including goal keeper Marko Dmitrovic and Charles de Oliveira, after interest in the pair from their La Liga rivals.

Oliveira was the key player for Mendilibar last season, netting 14 goals in just 17 league starts, ten league goals ahead of any of his team mates.

He has already brought in Marc Cucurella, who spent last season on loan the Estadio Iprura,  on a two years deal with a buy-back option for the defending La Liga champions.

They have also broken their transfer record, with a €3.5m move for Sporting Gijon midfielder Sergio Alvarez, again following a season-long loan in 2018-19.

Alvarez was highlighted as a top-priority target for the club after demonstrating his potential at the back of end of last season, and despite the board’s tight budget they financed the move, having already agreed an informal deal with Sporting Gijon.

As Mendilibar continues to search the free transfer and loan market to bring talent into the club, the signing of Real Madrid full back Alvaro Tejero to boost their options for 2019-20.

Tejero was highly rated at the Santiago Bernabeu, and was sent out to Segunda Division side Albacete Balompie for a twelve month loan in the 2018-29 season.

Despite coming through the ranks at the club, his options are likely to be limited due to Zinedine Zidane bringing in Lyon left back Ferland Mendy – with Marcelo and Sergio Reguilon already on the books at the club.

Tejero come come straight into the club, with left back proving a problem for Mendilibar last season, with Jose Angel potentially leaving the club after two seasons.

Fellow news signing Cucurella is set to return to his position on the left of midfield, supported by Tejero, in what could prove to be a very fruitful partnership for Mendilibar’s side.
